What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the stunning architecture of English Martyrs Churches, with many highlighting the Pugin designs and unique artistic features like the Sistine Chapel replica. The opportunity to attend traditional Masses is also a significant draw for some. However, a few reviewers have noted a lack of warmth or friendliness from some congregations, though others find the priests and religious community to be very welcoming.
"I attended a Sunday Mass a while ago and didn’t see much welcome or friendliness at all from the congregation."
Fiona Morant
"This church was designed by Edward Pugin, the eldest son of Augustus Welby Pugin. It was later extended by Peter Paul Pugin, a half brother of Edward.
It is one of the finest Pugin churches, altrhough, alas, the tower and spire were never built."
Paul Waddington
"Beautiful Pugin Roman Catholic church now under the care of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. They say the traditional Tridentine Latin Mass every day at 12 noon, with a special devotion to the English martyrs on Fridays. Mass is offered every day. There is a sung Mass on Sunday at 9am. Sung by the nuns of the Institute who have now established a small convent in Preston. The architecture alone is enough to merit a visit to the church. There is a High Altar where Mass is offered, and 4 side altars. The stations of the cross are absolutely beautiful and protected by ornate glass panes to protect them. Unfortunately due to decreasing congregants the church hasn't had the money to retain the church in it's former glory, but efforts and fund raising is on-going so that we don't lose this beautiful Prestonian landmark."
