"By coincidence I was visiting a friend on one of the museums steaming days so got to see this old beam engine in all its glory and as an extra bonus on a day when entry was free. Great atmosphere and very knowledgeable and friendly staff. The museum is right next to the canal so this adds to the interest. Well worth the visit as it's always interesting to learn about the history of an area."

The staff were very welcoming, it was abundantly clear that they are passionate about the museum and its history, and the mill is 100% dependant on their commitment. As with so much in the local area it is important to maintain the link with our industrial heritage. Thank you to the volunteers."

The Marvel of the Steam Mill

The heart of the Etruria Industrial Museum is Jesse Shirley's 1857 Bone and Flint Mill. This isn't just any old piece of machinery; it's the world's only operational steam-powered potter's mill still in existence. Instagram+2 The sheer scale and engineering prowess required to build and maintain such a machine in the mid-19th century are astounding. When the mill is 'in steam,' visitors can witness the powerful beam engine at work, a truly immersive experience that connects you directly to Stoke-on-Trent's rich industrial past. The process of heating the boiler and getting the mill ready can take several days, highlighting the dedication involved. Instagram

This mill played a crucial role in the production of bone china, a key industry in the 'Potteries' region. It processed raw materials like bone and flint, essential components for creating the fine porcelain that Stoke-on-Trent became famous for. The museum's volunteers are instrumental in keeping this heritage alive, often providing detailed explanations and demonstrations. Their passion is palpable and adds immense value to the visitor experience. InstagramReddit

Experiencing the mill in operation is a highlight for many visitors, offering a tangible link to the lives of the workers and the industrial might of the Victorian era. Even when not steaming, the mill's structure and machinery are impressive and tell a story of innovation and hard work. Instagram

It's a perfect spot for a leisurely walk, a relaxing picnic, or simply to enjoy the tranquility of the water. Instagram

Many visitors enjoy the contrast between the industrial heritage of the museum and the natural beauty of the canal.
