"Legendary & Historical Hadrian Wall
This is a great place to start your Hadrian Wall visit. It is free of charge to walk around and you can take your dog, and it has a surprisingly high number of pathways you can take to stroll next to the Hadrian Wall.
This place also has some of the best preserved sections, and the park is really nice too. Highly recommended!"

"We really enjoyed this. We actually returned the day after to try some of the different walks. One walking trail, the red one, had very ambiguous signs on the walk , and on one instance we found ourselves on the castle walk , so we kept going.
The shop is lovely with nice gifts and the best filter coffee and the lady there was so friendly and chatty.
All in all this was two great days out."
Shane McDonald
"This is a lovely place to visit with stunning scenery and having Hadrian's Wall so close and easy to explore. I would have given 5 stars had the cost of parking been more reasonable. £3 for the 1st hour, then £1 for each hour (April 2025) up to a maximum of £6 for the full day."

Exploring Hadrian's Wall at Walltown
Visitors often remark on the impressive state of preservation here, which provides a clear sense of the wall's original scale and construction. The surrounding landscape, including the dramatic Walltown Quarry, adds a unique dimension to the experience. It’s a place where history and nature converge, offering a memorable journey back in time. Remember to wear sturdy footwear as the terrain can be uneven in places, especially when venturing off the main paths.
For those seeking a deeper understanding, the park serves as an excellent introduction to the broader Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. The accessibility of these well-preserved sections makes it a highlight for many who visit the area, offering a chance to imagine life on the Roman frontier.
Navigating the Trails and Terrain
Recent improvements have focused on enhancing accessibility, with new tarmac footpaths being laid to make certain areas more navigable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. However, it's important to note that many parts of the park, especially those leading to higher vantage points or more rugged sections of the wall, can still present challenging, uneven, and muddy terrain. This is particularly relevant for visitors with mobility issues or those visiting during wetter seasons.
Despite these challenges, the effort to explore the higher ground, such as the top of the quarry, is often rewarded with stunning views and access to more intact stretches of Hadrian's Wall. The park encourages exploration, but a degree of preparedness regarding navigation and terrain is recommended for a comfortable and enjoyable visit.
Amenities and Visitor Services
Basic facilities like toilets are available and are kept clean, ensuring comfort for day visitors. Picnic tables are also provided, allowing families and groups to enjoy meals amidst the scenic surroundings. While the park itself is free to enter, parking incurs a fee, which is payable via card at the meter.
For those seeking more extensive dining or shopping options, the nearby towns of Hexham and Brampton are easily accessible and offer a wider range of services. This makes Walltown Country Park a convenient stop for both a historical exploration and a practical break.
