What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Oakhurst Cottage for its authentic charm and the exceptional quality of the guided tours. The National Trust volunteers are frequently highlighted as the stars of the show, bringing the history of this 16th-century dwelling to life with passion and knowledge. While the cottage is small, its preservation and the insights it offers into 19th-century rural life make it a highly recommended visit, though finding it can be a minor challenge.
"Charming little cottage dating back to the 16th century, last occupied in the 19th century and remarkably well preserved, with an authentic cottage garden.
The property offers a look into the life of an agricultural labourer in the 1800s, and can only be visited as part of a guided tour booked in advance. My tour group was small, and the National Trust volunteers were excellent, providing some really interesting insights into the history of the cottage and its inhabitants.
The tour lasted around 90 minutes, during which time the visitors were able to pass round and examine some unusual period pieces while learning about each room. The guides were very knowledgeable, friendly and happy to answer questions.
There's roadside parking in the village a couple of minutes walk from the house, with a small National Trust sign by the road pointing visitors in the direction of the house. Local residents were helpful in pointing me in the direction of the cottage.
The cottage isn't far from Winkworth Arboretum, another National Trust site well worth a visit, particularly in late spring and autumn. You can spend a morning here before heading to the cottage in the afternoon."

"A little place with quite a story. Located in a lovely setting this farmers cottage is fitted out in the style of the 1850's.
Entry is by bookable guided tour given by national trust volunteers.
They have a wealth of knowledge and are great at setting the scene and telling the story of the house and those who lived there.
There are just a few rooms on the lower and upper floor but there is much to learn. I was there for around 1.5 hours.
Entry is free for National Trust members and there is limited free parking nearby.
National Trust membership is from Β£7.50 per month for individual membership but there are deals for couples, families and for 17-25 year olds
National Trust Winkworth Arboretum is a ten minute drive away so it would be easy to visit both locations on the same day.
The house is closing for the winter very soon but opens again in April 2025.
I really have to mention the wonderful work the NT volunteers do. It would not be the same without them.
Booking a tour is essential as the house is quite small and cannot accommodate large groups."

"We were delayed so late for tour. The lady who conducted the tour was very understanding and included us in the tour of the outside then gave us a quick personal tour of the downstairs. We don't feel we've missed anything but will go back. It is an unusual property, unspoilt and in a beautiful place. The only issue we had was finding it. We used Google and got near but the lack of NT signage made it awkward. We didn't see any signage en route until we were almost at the door. Even that was small and not at the usual height. It seems it's a common issue as a resident came to us and knew what we were looking for, it happens so often."
