"Today we discovered a gem of Cumbrian heritage on a walk through Beetham, the Heron Corn Mill on the River Bela.
A mill has stood on this site since 1096, serving the local community for centuries. The current mill, built in 1740, was one of two powered by the river, the other became a paper mill and still produces paper today. Although flour production ceased here in 1958, the building was beautifully restored by the Beetham Charitable Trust in 1975, and the waterwheel still turns, grinding flour that can be bought in the shop.
Stepping inside is like walking through history – the machinery, the stories, the sense of continuity. Outside, the River Bela sparkles, shoals of fish dart beneath the clear water, and the peaceful setting reminds you that industry and nature once worked hand in hand.
From the mill, we wandered across the Dallam Estate towards Milnthorpe, enjoying sweeping views of the estuary and Lakeland hills, before encountering the magnificent Dallam Tower house and herds of deer in the historic parkland.
What struck me most was how places like this connect heritage, community, and sustainability. The mill isn’t just a relic, it’s a living reminder of craftsmanship, conservation, and the value of preserving local history for future generations.

"What a really interesting place, covering the history of the mill,all the way to the present day with the hydro electricity been produced. We intended just to have a look around,after having done a circular walk, but we were asked if we wanted a guided tour( it's free ). Thank you Iain for taking us round, your enthusiasm and knowledge was greatly appreciated. You can buy products from the barn,where you can also buy refreshments and watch the educational videos - very interesting. At certain times of the year you can watch the salmon and trout coming up stream, over the leap, which has been made to accommodate them - great to see.

The barn next door is a lovely little stop off to have a drink and rest after one of the pretty local walks. Seating inside or out. The Mill also sells a useful walk booklet detailing these.
