Reviews Summary

A tranquil 60-acre wetland nature reserve offering diverse wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly for birds and insects. Visitors appreciate the natural beauty and the dedicated bird hides, though the rough terrain and lack of facilities like toilets are noted drawbacks. The strict dog-free policy is also a key point for visitors.

"This is a quiet 60-acre wetland nature reserve owned by Sandwich Town Council. It is located on the outskirts of Sandwich and can be reached on foot from the Sandwich Quayside by crossing the old Tollbridge, walking north for about 300 metres then left on a permissive farm track. Alternatively, drive to the small car park at the north-western end of the Monks Way Road and enter the Reserve from there.
The Reserve has interesting wildlife at all times of the year, with wintering wildfowl in increasing numbers, breeding wetland birds, some unusual flowers including various orchids and a range of insect species including interesting butterflies and dragonflies. Work is being done to increase the amount of open water at all seasons, in order to encourage even more wetland species.
Public access around the Reserve is by a circular footpath along embankments, which gives good views across all of the main area. The walking surface is rough in places and unsuited to people with mobility issues. Some areas of the Reserve are off-limits to the public and in order to protect the wildlife, the whole area is a dog-free zone (except for assistance dogs and these must be kept on a lead). There are two public bird watching hides but no toilet facilities."
