Soooo happy to be here! Tonight at St Mary's Church in Barnard Castle - The King's Mother and me and a fabulous audience. This is a church that meant so much to Cecily's son Richard III. He planned a great collegiate church here - an engine of prayer for the house of York. Some nights are nights to be remembered forever. This was one. #Thekingsmother #Cecily #richardiii #barnardcastle

Reviews Summary

Visitors find St. Mary's Church Barnard Castle to be a beautiful, ancient, and tranquil place offering a peaceful respite. Its historical significance, including links to King Richard III, and unique features like the floor labyrinth and Norman doorway, are highly appreciated. While some may find it a brief visit, its historical depth and serene atmosphere make it a worthwhile stop.

"This ancient and beautiful church is just across the road from the Buttermarket. I had a look inside on a brief visit to Barnard Castle, and it offered me a tranquil respite from the bustle of the town. Dating from 1130, it has a fascinating history and strong links to King Richard III, and although it has been much restored and altered over the centuries, some medieval features remain, including a font decorated with strange symbols, and a 14th century tomb effigy. I loved the Victorian stained glass windows, and was intrigued by the labyrinth inlaid into the floor on the right of the church. There are a few postcards and books that you can purchase just inside the entrance. Outside, there's an intricately carved Norman doorway at the back of the church, and some interesting old gravestones in the rambling and leafy churchyard."

"This is a lovely old church, open to the public. There has apparently been a church on this dote since the 12th century, though the current building is later. Very peaceful and pleasant to wander around."

Tim J

"My partner was very happy she found some of her relatives there."
