What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Stephen G Terrell Recreation Center for its gorgeous facility, kind staff, and excellent value, particularly for families with young children who benefit from the playroom childcare and included fitness classes. However, some express frustration with overly strict rules for older children in play and sports areas, leading to a perception of it being geared more towards younger kids or seniors.
"Rules are way too strict around letting kids play. My 7 year old can’t play basketball, soccer, or enclosed jungle gym while I work out. I could be walking on the upstairs track or actively watching from a treadmill and it still doesn’t fly. The play area is the main reason I joined. It’s good for kids 1-5 for the daycare, but between 6-10 isn’t worth it. My kid was swimming solo at Apex Center when he was 5, rules are way too strict"

"Finally got to see it today and it was well worth the wait! This place is gorgeous and the staff were so kind, even while they were completely swamped. What originally sold me on membership was the 2hrs of playroom care every day and the fact that group fitness is included in membership (no extra cost). I’ve found gym childcare is usually really disappointing, but today’s playroom staff were a breath of fresh air and my little one had a blast! (I even got to take a quick picture since he was the only one in there when we went)."

"I go here for fitness classes and really enjoy it. My kids also attend chess lessons here. There’s a comfortable space where you can sit and work while waiting for your children, and when you attend group classes yourself, you can leave the kids in the dedicated playroom. It’s very convenient and well-organized!"

👨👩👧 Families with Young Children
However, parents of slightly older children (ages 6-10) should be aware of the strict supervision rules that may limit their kids' access to certain sports areas or the playground. While the intention is safety, some parents find these restrictions frustrating. It's advisable to clarify these rules beforehand to avoid disappointment. Despite this, the overall atmosphere and the availability of structured activities like chess lessons make it a valuable resource for families in the area.
Fitness Enthusiasts
While the center excels in group fitness and general workout spaces, it's important to note the absence of a swimming pool or spa facilities. This means that if your fitness routine heavily relies on aquatic activities or you seek a more comprehensive wellness center experience, you might need to supplement your visits or look elsewhere. Nevertheless, for those prioritizing group classes and gym access, it's a well-regarded option.

Understanding the Playroom and Childcare
However, it's crucial to be aware of the age restrictions and supervision rules that apply not only to the playroom but also to other children's areas. Some visitors have expressed frustration with what they perceive as overly strict policies, particularly for children between 6 and 10 years old, who may not be allowed in certain play zones even when supervised by a parent. This has led to some members questioning the value proposition if their older children cannot fully utilize the facilities.
Before your visit, it's highly recommended to confirm the specific hours of operation for the playroom and understand the exact rules for children's access to different areas. This will help manage expectations and ensure a smoother experience for your family.
Fitness and Group Activities
Beyond fitness classes, the center also hosts specialized lessons, such as chess, which are popular among families. The availability of these programs within the same facility where parents can work out or attend their own classes adds a layer of convenience. The presence of a comfortable waiting area for parents further enhances this aspect, allowing for productive use of time while children are engaged in their activities.
While the focus is on fitness and structured activities, it's worth noting the absence of amenities like a swimming pool or sauna. This means visitors looking for aquatic activities or spa-like relaxation will need to seek those elsewhere. The center excels in providing a robust fitness and class-based experience within a community-focused environment.
