Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Fetterman Battlefield Monument a fascinating and important historical site, particularly for those familiar with the Great Plains Indian Wars. The interpretive signs are praised for their clarity in explaining the battle and its participants. While the monument itself is described as 'ugly,' the overall experience is considered worthwhile for learning about a significant military defeat and the history of settler colonialism. Reddit

"Fascinating History and important battle in the Great Plains Indian Wars. The placards along the walking trail do a great job describing the battle and the participants. From my own reading on the subject I think the placards do a good job describing a controversial event."

Brian

"A worthwhile, fun, and interesting stop. It has helpful interpretative signs to help me visualize the progress of the battle along with good descriptions of the combatants. I walked it in sunny late August, mid-day with 1 liter of water. I should have carried two liters. Still, had a great time and learned a lot."

Michael Ryan

"Fascinating to finally visit the site of the Fetterman defeat after reading Dee Brown's memorable book many years ago. Good walk that has many explanatory signs and some good descriptions of the events as well as some informed conjecture about what happened to Fetterman's command. The rather ugly monument is a suitable memorial to military hubris but the site is well worth a visit to mark the biggest defeat of Settler Colonialism before the Little Big Horn. Tragic that it only slowed the genocide. Plenty of interesting biodiversity for them that want to look."

The Fetterman Massacre: A Turning Point

The Fetterman Battlefield Monument commemorates a devastating defeat for the U.S. Army during the Red Cloud's War. On December 21, 1866, Captain William J. Fetterman and his command of 81 soldiers and civilians were ambushed and annihilated by a large force of Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors. This event, the army's worst defeat in the West until the Battle of the Little Bighorn, sent shockwaves through the nation and highlighted the fierce resistance of Native American tribes to westward expansion. Reddit

Visitors can walk the battlefield, following interpretive signs that detail the troop movements and the warriors' tactics. The site offers a somber reflection on the human cost of conflict and the complex history of the American West. The monument itself, while described by some as 'rather ugly,' serves as a stark reminder of the events that transpired here. Reddit

Understanding the context of Red Cloud's War, which was fought to prevent the U.S. Army from establishing forts along the Bozeman Trail, is crucial for appreciating the significance of the Fetterman Massacre. The Native American victory here temporarily halted U.S. military efforts in the region, demonstrating the power and determination of the allied tribes. Reddit

Exploring Fort Phil Kearny

Just a short drive from the Fetterman Battlefield Monument lies Fort Phil Kearny, a key U.S. Army post established in 1866. This fort was central to the Bozeman Trail conflict and was eventually abandoned following the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty. Visiting Fort Phil Kearny provides essential context for the Fetterman Massacre, allowing you to visualize the military presence and the strategic importance of the area. Reddit

While the original fort structures are no longer standing, the site features interpretive displays and a visitor center that offer insights into the daily lives of soldiers and the historical events that unfolded. Walking the grounds where the fort once stood helps to paint a more complete picture of the military-civilian-Native American interactions of the era. Reddit
