What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Buffalo Peaks Wilderness for its incredible solitude, unique volcanic-influenced landscapes, and abundant wildflowers. It's an underrated gem offering a peaceful escape with opportunities for hiking, camping, and fishing, though some note the terrain can be challenging when wet or dry.
"Why come to the Buffalo Peaks area? Because it's close, quiet, and weird. Many people drive right on by on their way to the Sawatch mountains and have never stopped by here; it's never crowded. Due to the area's volcanic origin, it is quite different from other mountain areas, with thick clayish soil and crumbly rock where exposed. If it's excessively wet or dry, the dirt gets mucky or dusty, but is nice with normal rain patterns. This soil allows for more wildflowers and aspen than expected on the dry (sunny) side of a dry range. The scenery is unique, with blue spruce and aspen next to old gnarled bristlecones and sagebrush, with streams and marshes that disappear as quick as they appeared. It feels like the setting of a western, with the high dry hills flanked by grassy valleys full of cows grazing.
The area is good for both RV and tent camping, with plenty of spots for both. The areas off road 435 would be better for OHV riding, the areas off road 431 are better suited for hiking, ebiking, or fishing. Make sure to check if the area is open for the season before arriving."

"Underrated and often overlooked. It’s untouched, quiet, and beautiful. I’m almost always the only one at the campsites near the trailhead and I go often. Buffalo Peaks may be 13ers, but they have an allure about them and are stunning. Don’t miss out."

"Pristine wilderness. Very few people since there are no 14ers or well known sites."
