Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Davis Mountains Preserve as a majestic and special place in Texas, highlighting its unique 'sky island' ecosystems and the crucial conservation work of The Nature Conservancy. The challenging hikes, particularly to Baldy Peak, are a major draw, offering breathtaking views. While the remote location and limited access require planning, the experience is widely considered worth the effort.

"We took a group of young men to hike to Baldy. There were so emany beautiful views! The hike was fairly step but a great way to enjoy the day. The trail was wide and we'll maintained."

D Griffin

"The Davis Mountains Preserve is one of the most special and majestic places in Texas! It’s incredible that this area is protected by a nonprofit organization, allowing the public the privilege of visiting on select weekends throughout the year.

The Nature Conservancy, whose mission is "To conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends," truly exemplifies what a conservation nonprofit can achieve. The rugged yet fragile "Sky Island" at high altitude within these lands is a breathtaking sight.

We owe this privilege to the dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to preserve this natural beauty. I highly recommend camping here before hitting the trail, as it significantly enhanced our experience.

Here are my notes on summiting Baldy Peak:

The trail is approximately 8.1 miles long with 2,100 feet of elevation gain. It was absolutely amazing, taking us to the rooftop of one of Texas' most epic peaks. The view from the top is awe-inspiring. For summer hikes, I highly recommend starting no later than 7 or 7:30 a.m. The short section to Baldy Peak involves a class 2 scramble with solid foot and handholds for the technical parts. Be sure to bring more water than you think you think you'll need!"

Daniel Wade

"Great 2.4 mile round trip hike. Some elevation and a seasonal stream."
