What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Davis Mountains State Park for its stunning natural beauty, well-maintained trails, and exceptional stargazing opportunities. The historic Indian Lodge adds a unique charm, and the park offers a peaceful escape into the West Texas landscape. Some find the RV campsites' leveling unusual, and cell service is notably absent.
"What an incredible region of the country. We just spent two days out here this Thanksgiving week, and we are so grateful to Texas State Parks for all of the wonderful and varied places to visit throughout this state. The afternoon we arrived we hiked the beautiful and vertiginous Montezuma Quail Trail to Indian Lodge Trail at sunset time and we saw an Audad (mountain goat) and baby! The next morning we hiked the Sheep Pen Canyon Loop which includes a spur up to the park’s highest point, Limpia Creek Vista. It was an epic beautiful all-day hike with many distinct features. The weather was perfect. (I’m not sure I’d be able to manage these hikes in the summer!) In addition to the mountain goats, we saw tarantulas, deer, and a roadrunner. The night sky was absolutely sublime. Both nights I happened to wake at 2am and found myself just staring up through the tent roof at God’s canvas. We did not eat buffet breakfast at the Indian Lodge but the next time I think we will!"

"This is one of my favorite state parks-- the campsites are well maintained and offer shade at the perfect times. The birding experience here is top notch, and I'm not a birder. They have some awesome trails that offer amazing views without too much stair climbing-- my round, sedentary butt still made it up and over the mountains with well placed benches for rest along the hike.
This place is wonderful for kids to run around. The star viewing is amazing."

"When we got to this park, there was no cell phone signal for Verizon or T-Mobile. These sites were spacious but very unusual. The RV was parked level, but down below our tow vehicle by about a foot. The park focuses a lot on viewing birds and wildlife plus the history of the park was very interesting as we learned about the CCC contributions during the Great Depression. There was a guided star viewing hike available at night. We drove up to an observation point and took lots of pictures down into the valley. The local town of Fort Davis had nothing to really see. The stores and restaurants are closed before two in the afternoon and we’re pretty rustic. There is a refurbished hotel that looks nice."
