GAVIOTA WIND CAVES This fun and scenic hike is easily accessed from the 101 freeway and leads to unique sandstone rock formations! Some of the caves have openings that give you framed panoramic views of the adjacent mountains and the ocean! HIKE DETAILS: 🥾 2.5 miles round trip, first part is less than 0.5 miles, very easy but paved. Next part is only about 1 mile, but all uphill 😣 and hard....

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique wind-carved caves and the spectacular panoramic views of the ocean and mountains. The hike is described as challenging but rewarding, with the 'top top' cave offering an iconic photo opportunity. Some find the trail steep and exposed, recommending sturdy footwear and plenty of water.

"You need to be prepared with hiking gears and beware of mountain lion. Trail mostly covers with weeds probably due to raining recently. There's no sign for the location. Google maps can't pinpoint the entrance."

Jerry Napombhejara

"The hike was not too long, but there are spots that are pretty steep. Nothing crazy, definitely bring water, and hiking it in the cooler weather definitely helps. There is no shade. The views are amazing. If you get tired there is one wind cave that is pretty cool you get to see a little more than half way up the hike. But if you can make it to the top top one, that one is really cool.

"Wow. This was an experience. Not a long hike but it’s mostly vertical and definitely need some good footwear (sneakers at the very least) and water. I don’t exercise very much and I took my senior father and it was probably around our limit. Nice that there are two layers to the caves so you can explore the first layer and get more energy to climb to the next. Certainly worth it to go to the top. Exceptional views of the channel islands and lots of really interesting plants along the way. We even saw a bunny!"
