Had to pivot this morning. Been planning to hike Broken Top/No Name Lake for about a month. The “road” to the trailhead was too iced over for me to attempt so instead I hiked along Fall Creek on the Green Lakes Trail for about 4 miles. There were several surprisingly impressive waterfalls for as small of a creek as it is. Absolutely beautiful trail through the woods with all the snow. #oregon #wat...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently rave about the breathtaking beauty of Green Lakes Trail, highlighting its stunning alpine lakes, volcanic vistas, and numerous waterfalls. The well-maintained trail offers a rewarding hiking experience, though securing the required permits during peak season is a significant hurdle for many. Some find the permit system restrictive, limiting access to this natural gem. TikTokReddit

"This is one of Oregon’s prettiest hikes! You have to get passes on recreation.gov the second they become available. Have your credit card pre-entered into their system so you can checkout in less than a minute or they are gone! They only give out a couple hundred passes, which is a crime honestly. There was a couple checking passes turning away people from Seattle, etc who had come a long way to experience it. We hiked the 10 miles out and back and there is hardly anyone on the trails! Beautiful!! Hopefully whoever makes these decisions will open it up to more people to experience the natural beauty of our taxpayer supported lands!"

Ron E.

"I’ve done 4 hikes in Oregon in this area and this one is my favorite so far. Nice packed natural trail. We went out and back over the sweet timber bridge."

Clay M

"Awesome hike! 100% worth it, lots of waterfalls on the hike up plus a lesser known seasonal waterfall that you can trek up to that you can see from the lake."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Green Lakes Trail can be a rewarding adventure for families, but it requires careful planning. The 9.1-mile round trip is a significant distance for younger children, so consider the age and stamina of your kids. Packing plenty of snacks and water is essential, as there are no facilities along the trail. TikTok

Focus on the shorter sections of the trail if a full out-and-back seems too daunting. The numerous waterfalls along the way can be a great motivator for kids, offering exciting points of interest. Ensure everyone has sturdy footwear, as the trail can be uneven and slick in places. Remember that permits are required during peak season, so securing these well in advance is crucial for a family outing. TikTokReddit

💰 Budget Travelers

For budget-conscious travelers, the Green Lakes Trail offers incredible natural beauty without a hefty price tag, provided you plan ahead. The main cost will be the permit fee (if applicable during your visit) and transportation to the trailhead. Reddit

Pack your own food and drinks to avoid expensive stops. The stunning scenery and the hike itself are the main attractions, so you won't need to spend money on activities once you're there. Consider visiting outside the peak permit season (after October 15th) when only a parking pass is typically needed, potentially saving on permit costs. TikTok

🐶 Dog Owners

If you're looking to bring your canine companion, the Green Lakes & Soda Creek Loop (12.5 miles) is a dog-friendly option that offers spectacular views. TikTok Remember to always keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and other hikers. Crucially, be prepared to pack out all dog waste to maintain the pristine condition of this wilderness area. TikTok

While the main Green Lakes Trail is popular, the loop offers a more extensive experience. Ensure your dog is well-behaved and accustomed to longer hikes, as the terrain can be challenging. Always carry extra water for your dog, especially during warmer months. TikTok

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Permit System

The Green Lakes Trail is a highly sought-after destination, and for good reason. However, its popularity necessitates a strict permit system, particularly from June 15 to October 15. Passes are released on Recreation.gov, and they tend to vanish within minutes of release. Travelers are strongly advised to create an account on the platform beforehand and have their payment information pre-entered to expedite the checkout process. Missing out on a permit means you won't be able to access the trail during these peak months. Reddit

Outside of the permit season (after October 15th), access typically requires only a parking pass purchased at the trailhead. This makes late fall a viable option for those who couldn't secure a summer permit. However, it's crucial to be aware of potential winter conditions, including snow and ice, which can impact road accessibility and trail safety. Always check the latest Forest Service updates before your trip. TikTok+1

Enforcement of permits is taken seriously, with rangers actively checking for valid passes. Travelers who have made long journeys to experience the trail have been turned away for lacking the proper documentation. Planning ahead and securing your permit well in advance is the key to a successful and stress-free visit to this stunning natural area. Reddit

Trail Conditions and What to Expect

The Green Lakes Trail is a well-maintained natural path, but it's not without its challenges. The 9.1-mile round trip hike involves approximately 1,174 feet of elevation gain, making it a moderate to strenuous trek. Hikers should be prepared for varied terrain, including sections that can become slick due to snowmelt, especially in the spring and early summer. TikTok+1

Beyond the main trail, there are opportunities for exploration. Some visitors mention a 'lesser known seasonal waterfall' that requires a bit of a trek to reach from the lake. The trail also traverses unique lava flows where you can see sparkling obsidian rocks, adding a geological marvel to the scenic beauty. Reddit

For those looking for a longer adventure, the Green Lakes & Soda Creek Loop offers a more extensive 12.5-mile trek, which is also noted as being dog-friendly. Regardless of the route chosen, proper footwear with good traction is highly recommended to navigate the trail safely and comfortably. TikTok+1

The Allure of the Alpine Lakes

The namesake Green Lakes are the undeniable crown jewels of this trail. These pristine alpine lakes are renowned for their stunning clarity and the breathtaking reflections they offer of the surrounding volcanic peaks, particularly South Sister and Broken Top. TikTokReddit

Many visitors describe the experience of reaching the lakes as incredibly rewarding, with the vibrant green hues of the water contrasting beautifully with the rugged mountain landscape. The area around the lakes is perfect for a leisurely break, a picnic, or even a refreshing (though likely chilly!) swim for the brave. TikTok

The journey to the lakes is equally captivating, with numerous waterfalls cascading along the trail's path. These natural water features add an auditory and visual delight to the hike, making the ascent as enjoyable as the destination itself. TikTok+1
