What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Travelers have mixed experiences at the US-Canada border crossing on the Haines Highway, with some reporting friendly officers and others encountering intense questioning. The highway itself offers breathtaking scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities, but its gravel sections and limited services require careful preparation. It's a road trip for the adventurous, demanding caution and self-sufficiency.
"Smooth entry into Alaska. The agent asked a few questions while his partner checked our passports. Good times."
Lavonda Allen
"We crossed this border after several US/Canada border crossing with pleasant and welcoming officers at all Canada borders but this border crossing was not really as others, it's Officer named Salimi started to ask lots of questions and asked us why we got stronger B2 USA Visa despite we were entering to Canada not USA he started to make question marks on our USA visa which was very strange, we are at Canada entrance not USA entrance, then he asked do you have alcohol we told maybe one beer then he told are you sure? Also in another question he told us do you have any criminal record in your home town in New Zealand? we told no, then he asked even not a speed ticket? We answered yes maybe but speed ticket is not a criminal record. He then told us, you shouldn't lie and tell the truth!! So this border crossing was very strange and we didn't feel welcome by his back and forward not related questions and interigating tone of language, at the end he told us you are good to go! Despite all other borders told us welcome to Canada. So I guess their officer should be trained much better than this to know how to ask and what to ask and how to welcome visitors to Canada."

๐ ๐บ๏ธ Getting There
The Haines Highway connects Haines, Alaska, to the Alaska Highway near Haines Junction, Yukon. You can start from either end. Access to Haines, Alaska, is typically via ferry or by driving the highway itself.
Much of the Haines Highway is a gravel road, especially the Canadian portion. While generally well-maintained, conditions can vary. It's advisable to check road reports before traveling, particularly outside of peak summer months.
The highway is generally open year-round, but winter conditions can be severe. Snow, ice, and avalanches can cause closures. It's crucial to check current road conditions and weather forecasts if traveling during the shoulder seasons or winter.
While passenger cars can manage, an SUV or a vehicle with higher clearance is recommended due to the gravel sections. Ensure your tires are in good condition. Four-wheel drive can be beneficial, especially in less-than-ideal conditions.
Services are very limited. There are a few small communities and lodges, but gas stations and restaurants are scarce. It's essential to fill up your gas tank and stock up on food and water before you begin your journey.
๐ซ ๐ซ Tickets & Entry
Yes, as the Haines Highway crosses the US-Canada border, you will need a valid passport or other WHTI-compliant travel document to cross between Alaska and the Yukon.

๐ธ ๐ธ Photography
Early morning and late evening offer the best light for landscape photography, with softer shadows and warmer tones. The 'golden hours' around sunrise and sunset are particularly stunning.
A versatile lens (like a 24-70mm) is great for landscapes and wildlife. A wide-angle lens is useful for expansive mountain views, and a telephoto lens is ideal for capturing distant wildlife. Don't forget a sturdy tripod for low-light conditions.
Chilkoot Lake, the views from Haines Summit, the Chilkat River valley, and any wildlife sightings are prime photographic subjects. Be ready to pull over safely at designated viewpoints.
Use a telephoto lens to maintain a safe distance. Be patient and quiet. Avoid using flash, as it can startle animals. Always prioritize your safety and the animal's well-being.
While you can't photograph the border agents or their equipment, you can capture the signage, the landscape around the crossing, and your vehicle's journey. Be mindful of any posted restrictions.
