What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the church for its historical significance, particularly its connection to Queen Lili'uokalani and the unique clock. The North Shore Country Market on Wednesdays is a highlight, offering a vibrant community atmosphere and local crafts. Some visitors note issues with cemetery lawn maintenance.
"Wasilla Church was founded by Chief La’anut (the grand nephew of Kamehameha I) and John Smith Emerson and his bride Ursula Sophia Newell Emerson, missionaries, in 1832 in a grass house on the corner of Kamehameha Highway and Haleiwa Road. The second building used was constructed in 1840 of adobe where the church's cemetery is now located. The third was constructed in 1890 of wood and rebuilt with cement in 1961, which is what you currently see. It is a member of the United Church of Christ and includes a seven dial clock donated by Queen Liliʻuokalani on January 1, 1892. The clock makes one revolution every 16 years and instead of numerals it has the letters L-I-L-I-U-O-K-A-L-A-N-I.
The first church was a pili grass hut 🛖 pavilion near the mouth of the Anahulu stream could seat 1500 and was filled to overflow on the day of its inaugural church service.
The current church was designed by the first native Hawaiian architect to graduate from the Harvard School of Architecture Theodore Vierra. The current building was dedicated in 1961. The stained glass windows added in 1974 were the work of Erica Karawina.
The church is currently named Lili’uokalani Protestant Church because the Princess and then Queen would often attend services. The congregation chose this name to honor the queen."

"The people who are in trust for the cemetery refuse to water the lawn! They said that the relatives of the deceased are responsible for watering the respective gravesites! I have never heard of that kind of complete disrespect for the living, and the deceased. The Hiroto siblings have shamed themselves"
