Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the astonishing beauty of Wai'anapanapa State Park, particularly its unique black sand beach and dramatic volcanic landscapes. The sea caves and coastal trails offer ample exploration opportunities. However, the mandatory reservation system and limited parking can be a significant hurdle, and the powerful ocean surf requires caution.

"Wai'anapanapa State Park was beautiful! The way in is a lush forest tunnel, and once in there's plenty of parking. A cute bonus were all the cats roaming the area! I assume they get fed by tourists a lot based on how friendly they were. The Black Sand Beach itself was pretty cool too. Mostly pebbles the further you get away from the water, but the sand is definitely there. Something I didn't expect of the place was the ASMR of the waves pushing the pebbles on each crash, it was a unique peace. The beach itself was a little smaller than expected, but nothing to complain about, there was still plenty of room. Likely due to the reservations. Don't miss out on the trail on the other side of the beach too! It takes a little climbing but you'll get a great cliff-height view of the park."

"Make sure you get your reservations in! It fills up fast! Definitely have to make this a must go on your trip. The views from the cliffs are amazing. Lots of paved pathways for ease of access. And the black sand beach is once in a lifetime."

Maeve

"This is a state park with a beach and cabins for rent. Entry and parking are free so go and explore!

The park is located west of Hana town. Look for the signs and turn down Waianapanapa Road. It's not a major intersection so you might not even notice it. Drive slow as the beginning part is a residential street. Once at the end, you either make a left towards the beach or right towards the cabins.

CABINS:
While I haven't stayed in them, I did peek in through the windows of an empty one. They're old, not too clean looking and of course not temperature controlled. I personally would not stay here as they're run by the state, not a hotel company with normal housekeeping duties. Reservations need to be made a few months in advance.

BEACH:
I've only been to the cliff area behind the cabins which are definitely not for swimming but great for ocean watching and getting fabulous pictures. There are cool cliff formations, gorgeous scenery of the coastline, and even a blowhole. A short, easily walkable trail gives you numerous vantage points. There is a swimmable sandy beach towards the west end but I haven't been there yet.

CAVES:
There are water-filled caves/lava tubes which you can check out safely and easily via foot trails. I've seen some people swimming in them once. SMH, just don't do that. It's so disrespectful to the park and its guests. Be a traveler, not a tourist."
