Navigating Ouachita's Gates

Many roads in Ouachita National Forest have gates that can be closed unexpectedly. Always have a reliable map and be prepared to open and re-close gates to exit if necessary. Don't assume an open gate means an open exit route.

Embrace the Wilderness (and the Heat)

Ouachita National Forest offers stunning natural beauty, but be prepared for Arkansas's heat and humidity, especially in summer. Consider visiting during cooler months or planning activities around the hottest parts of the day.

There are actually three waterfalls fairly close together in this part of the Ouachita National Forest. This one is Little Missouri Falls and it’s my favorite. It runs all year long but it’s especially grand in the spring for more water and in the fall for the colors. It’s also a great spot to cool off in the summer. There’s a parking lot with picnic areas and a pit toilet. It’s a quarter mile eas...

The journey is as good as the destination at Queen Wilhelmina State Park. Wind through the Ouachita National Forest on the Talimena Scenic Byway to the top of Rich Mountain, where the park’s famed “Castle in the Sky” lodge awaits. #ARStateParks #arkansasadventure #arkansas #visitarkansas #discoverarkansas #explorearkansas

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the abundant natural beauty, with countless creeks and scenic views perfect for relaxation and exploration. The peaceful environment and opportunities for activities like hiking and crystal digging are highly praised. However, the intense summer heat and humidity can be a significant drawback for some, and navigating the forest's gated roads requires careful planning.

"Beautiful Place, lots of scenic views. You can find a beautiful creek almost anywheres you turn. Even some just perfect to let the kids play without having to worry about too deep of water. Photos of creek were just steps away from our primitive camp spot!"

Lisa Vincent

"If the heat and humidity wasn't terrible in this area I'd give it 4 stars. Decent views, lots of Forest. Not much to do besides trails, views, and fishing. There are some 4x4 trials that are probably pretty cool. I wouldn't come here for any vacation without an air conditioning system set up rather in your tent or camper. You'd melt !"

Tyler Shinn

"Ouachita National Forest is such a beautiful and refreshing place to visit! The natural scenery, fresh air, and peaceful environment make it perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. A great spot for hiking, exploring, or just spending quiet time away from the city. Truly a natural gem!"
