What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Wallowa Lake Lodge offers a rustic, historic charm with beautiful lakefront views, particularly appealing for its cabins and natural setting. However, some guests have encountered issues with inconsistent service and occasional strong odors in lodge rooms. While the location is a major draw, dining experiences can be hit-or-miss, leading some to recommend nearby Joseph for more reliable service.
"We did not stay at the lodge (we are locals) but did meet friends there in the bar area for drinks and for the bar menu. The service was excellent and the food and drinks were good and were delivered in a timely manner. We have eaten in the bar area before and an improvement would be perhaps a couple more tables inside that can be reserved (you are not able to make reservations for the bar area and we did not want to sit outside nor eat in the restaurant) and we sure miss the pulled-pork nachos."

"Beautiful setting. We're off-season, so the cabins are completely self-service. Good amenities. Bed is pretty well used."

"We stayed in room 205 for two nights mid September 2025. We also rented another room on the second floor for a relative during the same period. We had family that stayed in two rooms on the third floor of the lodge
We had a problem that existed in both rooms on the second floor that had a very strong sewer gas smell. Almost to the level we debated if we can even stay in the room.
The family members on the third floor didn't have the sewer gas smell.
Since the lodge was full we knew they couldn't change our rooms.
The restrooms to the back of the dining room seems to be where the smell originated. The smell is really strong in this area. It could also be from someplace else?
I mentioned the sewer gas smell problem to a lodge employee at checkout. He asked which rooms we were in and acted surprised when I told him the problem. Not sure about that.
I called the lodge after we got home and asked for the manager to call me about this problem. Almost a week later no call.
Other than the sewer gas smell in certain areas of the lodge we generally enjoyed our stay. The lobby area is nice and the food in the dining room was good."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider visiting during the warmer months when outdoor activities are in full swing. The Wallowa Lake Tramway is an exciting experience for children, offering incredible views without a difficult hike. While the lodge rooms are more basic, the overall atmosphere is family-friendly. Be aware that service can be slow, so packing some snacks for the kids is always a good idea.
🚗 Budget Travelers
Look for off-season deals or consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (late spring or early fall) when prices might be lower and crowds thinner. While the lodge itself has a certain charm, focusing on the natural surroundings and self-catering in a cabin can make for a very economical yet memorable trip.
💑 Couples Seeking a Retreat
For a special occasion, consider booking a cabin and preparing a meal together, or enjoy a dinner in the lodge's dining room (though be mindful of potential service variations). The tranquil atmosphere and stunning natural beauty of the Wallowa Mountains create a perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway.

The Wallowa Lake Tramway Experience
At the summit, you'll find viewing platforms and walking trails. It's a fantastic spot for photography, with vistas that stretch for miles. The tram operates seasonally, typically from late May through September, so it's essential to check their operating schedule before your visit. This is a must-do for anyone seeking spectacular mountain scenery without a strenuous hike.
Many visitors rave about the views from the top, calling it a highlight of their trip. It's a relatively quick way to gain significant elevation and appreciate the grandeur of the 'Switzerland of America.' Remember to dress in layers, as it can be cooler at the summit than at the lake level.
Understanding the Lodge's Rustic Nature
Some guest reviews mention issues like strong odors in certain rooms, suggesting that the older infrastructure might present challenges. This is not uncommon in historic buildings. For those seeking more contemporary comforts or greater privacy, the year-round cabins are a highly recommended alternative. These cabins are self-service and offer more space and a more independent lodging experience.
When staying at the lodge, it's helpful to approach it with an appreciation for its history and character. It's a place to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty, rather than expecting a luxury resort experience. The lodge's setting on the lake is its primary allure, providing a serene backdrop for your Wallowa adventure.
Dining and Service: Local Perspectives
Interestingly, local advice often points towards exploring dining options in the nearby town of Joseph. Many reviewers suggest that establishments in Joseph, such as the local steakhouse, offer a more consistently positive and high-quality dining and service experience. This is a valuable tip for travelers looking to ensure a pleasant meal during their stay.
If you do choose to dine at the lodge, it's wise to manage expectations regarding service. Consider making reservations for the dining room well in advance if possible, and be prepared for a potentially relaxed pace. For those who prioritize exceptional service, a short drive to Joseph might be the better option.
