What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Picketwire Canyon Dinosaur Tracks, calling it a 'cool experience for any age' and an 'amazing find.' The sheer scale of the Apatosaurus tracks and the historical ruins are major highlights. However, the intense heat and lack of shade are frequently mentioned challenges, requiring significant water supplies and careful planning for the long hike.
"A really cool experience for any age. Whether your drive or hike make sure to bring tons of water as it is hot and there is very little shade. We decided on the hike from the trail head and it was an all day adventure. Be sure to cross the river to see the tracks on the other side, it seems worse than it really is. Overall, one my coolest experiences in Colorado!"

"Awesome historic ruins, beautiful vistas, amazing dinosaur tracks. The valley can be very hot, make sure you bring enough water (my wife and I drank almost 2 gallons, which was barely enough at 94 degrees) . The river was too high for us to cross due to recent rains, but normally you can cross it for many more dino tracks. Recommended. Only 4 camping spots at the Picketwire Trailhead, pit toilet only. First come first serve, forest service land so no fee."

"Amazing find! Both sides of the river here, especially the south side, are littered with depressions (tracks) made by Apatosauruses (Brontosauruses). On the north side, there is a small section where a dozen or so Allosaurus tracks are visible. Along the trail to get here, a scapula of an Apatosaurus was found, reinforcing the hypothesis of what made the tracks.
The trail from the Withers Trailhead to here is 5.5 miles. Even if you leave at dawn, during the summer, you need plenty of water! Like at least a gallon per person. You also may need water shoes to cross the shallow Purgatoire River to get to the majority of the tracks. Sometimes, the river is dry and that's not a problem, but you should think about that before you go."
