What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Travelers appreciate the Santa Fe Depot's historic architecture and its role as a convenient transit hub for exploring San Diego. While many enjoy the Amtrak experience, particularly sleeper accommodations and scenic routes, potential travelers should be prepared for common train delays and inconsistent schedule updates.
"Yay! Off I go to Chicago! This time I decided to travel by train because YES I can! Larryville to Chicago. Cool and fun! I'm old so I booked a roomette which is first class. I'm excited! I researched the heck out of it and decided in my old age, yes, let's do this! I will warn you, my friends, this specific route is not for you if you're anal retentive (me). Please download the app and see what time the train arrives for departure. I checked the departure time at least 40 times. Originally it was 454am. The train left at 630am and thankfully, I was on it. My attendant, Eric, was absolutely spot on! Oh wait! I didn't tell you prior to my departure I was able to upgrade with a "bid" from my roomette to a bedroom which I did and it was accepted! YAY! The bedroom is lovely and I had my own bathroom! Us oldies enjoy the heck out of that! Eric was super spot on delivering my meals (my decision as opposed to dining car). He came often to male sure I had everything I needed. The food was amazing! Really excellent. My return trip was not as attentive. George informed me he had 2 cars to attend to and couldn't accommodate my in compartment request. I was told later by a stellar employee that was not true. 🙄. Amtrak guest service came by and assured me the same. Long story short! Enjoy this experience! Prepare for tardy arrivals/departures. I will do this again and it's a go for first class as long as you have an attendant named Eric. ALL ABOARD!"

Train arrival from destination 43 min late. Made the rest of the morning stressful."

"We rode the Amtrak from Lawrence Kansas to flagstaff Arizona. The views were spectacular. I really enjoyed it. I will say we had a hard time sleeping on the train without a sleeper room. However the cost really really goes up to do that. I’d it’s in your budget that works be great. We played cards in the observation car. It was so fun. My only complaints would be the bathroom…. Yuck. The staff were not friendly and helpful. That was disappointing but the trip was so incredible. I’d do it again for sure."
