What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors describe Whaleback Natural Area as a 'magical' and 'surprise slice of heaven' with entertaining, winding trails and lovely views. While some find the trails overgrown and the lake views partially obstructed by forest growth, the peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty are consistently praised. It's considered a special, less crowded alternative to larger nearby attractions.
"This place feels magical. The winding trail through the woods and tiny switchbacks makes for an entertaining hike. The views are lovely. A much less busy trail than others in Sleeping Bear Dunes, but no less special. You hike out and back, but can add loops on your route."

"Surprise slice of heaven on earth. Fairly easy hike on well groomed trails through incredible trillium, ramp, and birch forests overlooking the water. Great spot to soak in the nature and create a core memory."
Jacob Osburn
"Lovely little trail! Peaceful and not too many people to be crowded. The lookout is definitely worth the half-ish mile hike (you can add on by taking the loop instead of doing an out an back). The only drawback is that the trails, especially in the actual Whaleback natural area, are a bit overgrown so it can be hard to get past others at times. Luckily, though, not much poison ivy on the sides of the trail and even some wineberries."
