Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about South Manitou Island's stunning natural beauty, from ancient forests and soaring dunes to historic shipwrecks and lighthouses. The remote, undeveloped nature offers a true escape. However, be prepared for the lack of amenities, the need to pack all supplies, and potential for mosquitos.

"My brother and I visited this island on a camping expedition. This is a remote location and national park so most importantly I would advise the following

-as much food as you can carry more than you expect
-a hikers backpack (HUGE benefit)
-bug spray (the mosquitos are bad in certain spots)
-more than 2 days (if you expect to explore most of the island)

We had a great time exploring the lighthouse, taking a dreamy stroll around the southwest shore, hiking the dunes, catching two bald eagles at the inland lake, and checking out the lighthouse and hiking through a historic, spirited place."

"Beautiful Island. The park Rangers and volunteers couldn't have been nicer. Friendliest group of people ever. If you are going for a day trip be aware that if you take one of the wagon tours you are not left with much time to do any exploring on your own. And while you do venture off the wagon for short hikes to your destination you probably will be disappointed if you came to "hike". Having said that whether you choose one of the 2 wagon excursions (you can't do both) or hike to specific points you won't be able to see even half of what the island has to offer. PS south manitou will be closed in 2026 for dock upgrades just as north manitou is this year."

"From Leland by ferry South Manitou Island offers many unique sights and attractions and has a very diverse and rich forest floor as there are no deer on the island.

The round trip hike of 6.9 miles from the Ranger Station to the old growth White Cedar forest is highly recommended and on the way you will also see the shipwreck Morazan. Some ancient white cedars are 350 years old and possibly 900 years old. Spectacular sandy beaches stretch for miles. Soaring perched sand dunes are on the west side of island.

Park pass required. No dogs. No food for sale. Clean restrooms, drinking water and picnic tables are available at the Visitor Center."
