What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Eastern Cemetery to be a place steeped in history, offering a poignant glimpse into both past scandals and present-day restoration efforts. While many appreciate the volunteer work and the unique atmosphere for photography, some note the extensive work still needed to fully restore the grounds, with overgrown areas and fallen monuments still visible.
"There is a lot of history here and you can feel it walking the grounds. It’s one of the cities oldest cemeteries, it was also all inclusive, regardless of ethnicity or income. There are many historical figures buried here as well as paupers. There is some dark history due to its mismanagement back in the day. Volunteers and families tend the grounds to try to keep the memories alive and preserve its history."

"The sadness of seeing this cemetery. There are so many headstones that are still covered up, laying down in the ground, fallen over. Lots of work still needs to be done to fix the cemetery. Please consider a donation of something to help fix this cemetery."

"This abandoned cemetery is now maintained by volunteers. It's a nice place to walk. Dogs and bikes are ok, unlike the adjacent Cave Hill Cemetery. Photo shows the door of what they call the Wake House which looks like a receiving vault to me. Receiving vaults were used to store remains over the winter for burial after the spring thaw. Modern grave digging equipment now allows year-round burials.
No restrooms."

The Scandal of Oversold Graves
This mismanagement and unethical practice eventually led to the cemetery's abandonment in 1989 when the extent of the over-burial was exposed. The site fell into disrepair, with many headstones becoming obscured by soil and overgrowth, and monuments toppled. The sheer scale of the deception has left a lasting, somber legacy on the grounds.
Today, the Friends of Eastern Cemetery and other dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to uncover, clean, and restore the headstones, aiming to bring dignity back to the forgotten individuals and their stories. Their efforts are a testament to preserving history and honoring those who were so tragically wronged.
Volunteer Restoration Efforts
These restoration efforts are not just about cleaning stones; they are about restoring dignity and acknowledging the lives that were lived. Some volunteers even host live streams to document their progress and encourage support for the cause.
Visitors can witness these restoration efforts firsthand, offering a poignant glimpse into the commitment to preserving this historically significant, albeit troubled, site. Supporting these volunteers through donations or by spreading awareness is crucial for the continued preservation of Eastern Cemetery.
Atmosphere and Photography
For photographers, the cemetery offers a wealth of visual interest. The interplay of light and shadow through the trees, the textures of weathered stone, and the poignant stories etched into the markers provide endless opportunities for evocative imagery. Capturing the contrast between the restored and unrestored sections further emphasizes the ongoing preservation efforts.
While the atmosphere can be described as 'creepy' by some, it's more accurately a profound sense of history and remembrance. It's a place that invites contemplation and respect, making it a memorable destination for those seeking a deeper connection with the past.
