What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Lake George for its breathtaking natural beauty, especially the stunning lake and surrounding Adirondack mountains. The variety of activities, from historical sites like Fort William Henry to outdoor adventures and seasonal events, appeals to a wide range of travelers. While many enjoy the vibrant summer atmosphere, some note that crowds and parking can be challenging during peak times.
"This place is absolutely beautiful. We went in mid-June, and snow was still on the mountainside. A beautiful waterfall and crystal clear water! Don't miss out on this one!"
Amanda Weskamp
"Perfect afternoon! Lake George is part of the Mammoth lake trails. You can spend an entire day on moderate strenuous trails. I spent the day fishing under a tree line shore. Did not catch anything.
Scenic views and fresh mountain air. My kids spent the afternoon exploring the shoreline and hoping to avoid bears. We had a nice picnic at the bench table. I will definitely be back here next summer.
Large parking lot and sort of clean restroom. Please pack out your trash."
Sam Bawahab
"Always try to get to this lake early in the morning to get parking! If lot is full, you can park about 1/4 mile away along the shore of Lake Mary. There are a few easier trailheads here (TJ Lake 1.5 miles, Barrett Lake 1 mile, and Crystal Lake 3 miles). Great spot for a picnic, fishing or bring your kayak or SUP board. Be aware of bears, use bear lockers to store food and don’t leave your fish on a stringer or you’ll have a hungry hairy visitor."

Exploring the Adirondack Park
Beyond Lake George itself, the surrounding region boasts numerous other beautiful lakes like Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and the smaller, more secluded alpine lakes. These offer different experiences, from Olympic history in Lake Placid to quiet fishing spots. The Eastern Sierra region, while often associated with California, shares a similar rugged beauty and outdoor recreation focus with the Adirondacks, making it a comparable destination for nature lovers.
When exploring the Adirondack Park, remember to practice Leave No Trace principles. This includes packing out all trash, staying on marked trails, and respecting wildlife. The park's natural beauty is a treasure, and responsible tourism ensures it remains for future generations. Many Redditors emphasize the importance of respecting the environment and being prepared for the wilderness.
Seasonal Adventures at Lake George
Fall transforms the region into a breathtaking spectacle of color. The fall foliage in the Adirondacks is world-renowned, drawing visitors for scenic drives, hiking amidst vibrant leaves, and enjoying crisp autumn air. This is a fantastic time for photographers and those seeking a more tranquil, yet visually stunning, experience. The weather can be cooler, so packing layers is essential.
Winter brings a different kind of magic, with snow transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland. Lake George becomes a hub for winter sports, including skiing and snowboarding at nearby resorts like Killington (though Mammoth Mountain is a California example, the principle applies to the region's ski offerings). Ice fishing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are also popular. The village takes on a cozy, festive atmosphere, especially around the holidays.
Spring offers a quieter transition, with melting snow giving way to blooming wildflowers and returning wildlife. While some activities may still be limited by lingering snow or cooler temperatures, it's a great time for hiking and enjoying the awakening natural beauty before the summer rush. The waterfalls can be particularly impressive with the spring melt.
Family Fun and Activities
On the water, boat tours are a hit with families, offering a chance to see the lake from a different perspective without strenuous activity. Many families also enjoy renting kayaks or paddleboards for a gentle exploration of the shoreline. The numerous hiking trails around the lake, especially those with shorter loops like the trails near Lake Mary, are perfect for little legs to explore nature and perhaps spot some local wildlife.
When planning a family trip, consider staying at a resort with family-friendly amenities like pools or kids' clubs. Packing essentials like sunscreen, hats, and comfortable shoes is crucial. Remember to also pack snacks and drinks, as keeping kids fueled is key to a successful outing. Many visitors find the relaxed atmosphere of the lake and the abundance of outdoor activities make it an ideal family getaway.
