What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
May Prairie State Natural Area is a highly specialized destination for serious nature enthusiasts, particularly those interested in rare plants and macro photography. Visitors praise its untouched beauty and the opportunity to see endangered species. However, the lack of amenities, trails, and reliable navigation, coupled with potential safety concerns, makes it unsuitable for casual visitors or families seeking traditional park experiences.
"This is an area set aside to protect the environment for rare and or critically endangered plants - orchids, grasses, etc. If you are into macro photography of plants, mushrooms, plants, this is for you. For best experience, take a friend into native plants, or find a group event. If you are not into plants, bugs, mushrooms, birds, this is not the place for you/ kids. Though dogs are allowed you will be picking clinging plants off the doggo, as I was yesterday from me. Narrow deer tracks only. NO - NONE- ZERO established trails or facilities of any kind except a rather isolated parking area. Been there twice - ZERO other people. So, take a friend, let someone know where you are, take water/ basic wilderness survival gear. If you have a medical emergency here alone, you are in trouble. Dress appropriately and expect ticks and snakes. If you depend on Cell based maps to stay oriented in woods, results may vary, so be wise. It is not too far away from civilization, but you could get lost for a while. Both times I visited, Google maps and online information did not lead to location on two devices. Found location by looking up this info: "From I-24 take the Manchester exit 114. Proceed south on U.S. 41 away from Manchester for approximately one mile. May Prairie is on the north side of U.S. 41 across from an auto salvage business. A small parking area for the WMA is on Asbury Road on the right about one and a half miles off of U.S. 41.""

"Great place. I found a yellow crested orchid. You can't get lost if you have a phone. Lots of brush and mosquitos."
Alex Hejna
"sketchy parking lot, easy for a car break-in/robbery. was tough to navigate, not even game trails to really follow. would be easier to access behind the restaurant down the road where the prairie actually is."
