Going camping this weekend with a couple of friends. We’re looking for open land where we can camp for 2 nights and just hang out, have a campfire and stargaze. Somewhere in So Cal that isn’t too far away. I’ve heard Joshua tree or Mojave blm land is good but any suggestions on…

I’m an avid hiker. I’m curious if anyone knows of any hikes that aren’t necessarily on AllTrails or just the normal go to hikes in the area. I like to explore and tend to find hidden spots but thought I’d just put it out there to see if people have recommendations that they’d be…

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the unique and adventurous slot canyons, describing them as a 'crazy experience' with 'pure wilderness.' The challenging terrain, ladders, and opportunities for exploration are highly praised. However, the extreme heat, unmarked trails, and sometimes questionable condition of ropes and anchors are noted as significant drawbacks that require careful preparation.
"Did the trail named Red Canyon and Bat Cave Loop from AllTrails the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Went with a friend, and I would highly recommend not going solo. Started at 1pm and spent around 4 hours there. We definitely went off the trail from AllTrails, and spent a bunch of time in the slot canyons, going up and down ladders. Fun experience, but we were always worried whether we would have to go back all the way or able to reconnect to the trail we had on our Garmin watches. Ended up with close to 9 miles on foot and 1400 feet of elevation gain. It's a fun experience for sure. Very very hot and dry - it was 100 degrees throughout. Each of us ran through 2.5 liters of water easily. The trailhead is not marked in any way, so we initially drove past it, then used our Garmin navigation to come back and find where to start."

"This is a great place in Mecca, California to find the craziest experiences that California has to offer. Talking about secluded slot canyons and pure wilderness as far as the eye can see. It’s very beautiful any season. You won’t be disappointed because it’s so wild that you can even veer of the unmarked trail and discover new worlds and new canyons. It’s not a chocolate factory but it’s as close as you’ll get to one with all the brown topography and the chocolate Hills."

"There is great hiking in the Box Canyon area of the Mecca Hills Wilderness. Probably the most popular is Painted Canyon. To get there take 66th Ave. east from Mecca, which turns into Box Canyon Road at the east edga of town. The signs warn about Box Canyon Road being closed, which is true, but it is closed just after the Painted Canyon Rd turnoff. The Painted Canyon Rd is a gravel road and is marked for 4 wheel drive only. Previously 2 wheel drive cars were able to traverse the road all the way to the Painted Canyon Trailhead but since the recent flooding this is no longer possible. They can get most of the way but the last 1/2 to 1 mile has soft, deep sand, so you will see them parked along the side of the road.
Even though the Box Canyon Road is officially closed, it is possible to follow a rough, sandy 4x4 trail to get to popular hiking areas in Box Canyon. Don't be fooled at the road closed sign, where there is still pavement, it soon ends and is 4x4 only!"
