Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise The Bubbles for their stunning natural beauty and rewarding hikes. The iconic Bubble Rock and panoramic views are major highlights, offering unique photo opportunities. While the trails can be challenging with rock scrambling, the scenery is widely considered worth the effort. Some visitors note the small parking lot and potential for crowds during peak times.

"This is on the south bubble trail. You can try the north bubble trail as well for beautiful lake views but it is kinda steep. The huge bubble rock is carried here by glacier long time back and is an erratic rock which means it's composition is very different from the surrounding rocks. Try pushing the boulder and see if you can get some nice pics here. People get very creative here for the pics."

"Great hike! Lots of stairs and rock scrambling to get to the top but the views are worth it! We took the route to the North Bubble and there are several overlooks along the way. The trail is mostly shaded but I still recommend packing water, sunscreen, and a hat. Bring a snack to enjoy at the top! I saw a lot of people without any supplies on them. Could be up to a 4 mile hike if you continue to the South Bubble. The parking lot is small."

Sam A

The Geology of Bubble Rock

The Bubble Rock is a prime example of a glacial erratic, a rock that was transported and deposited by a glacier far from its original source. Geologists estimate that this massive boulder was carried by ice sheets thousands of years ago from a different geological region and then deposited where it sits today. Its composition is distinct from the surrounding granite of Acadia, further confirming its glacial origins. Reddit

The precarious balance of the Bubble Rock is a testament to the immense power of glacial movement and the forces of erosion. Despite its size, it appears to be delicately balanced, leading to the popular visitor activity of trying to push it. While it's a fun photo opportunity, the rock is incredibly heavy and firmly in place, a stable monument to ancient geological processes. Reddit

Understanding the geological history adds another layer of appreciation to the visit. It's a tangible piece of Earth's past, brought to you by the slow, powerful march of glaciers. The surrounding landscape, shaped by the same forces, provides a dramatic backdrop to this natural wonder. Reddit

Photography Tips for The Bubbles

Capturing the essence of The Bubbles requires a bit of planning and an eye for detail. The Bubble Rock itself is a magnet for photographers, offering endless creative possibilities. Experiment with different angles to emphasize its precarious balance or use a wide-angle lens to capture its imposing size against the backdrop of the landscape. Posing with the rock, as if pushing it, is a classic shot that many visitors enjoy. Reddit

The overlooks on the North Bubble Trail provide sweeping vistas that are best captured with a wide-angle lens to encompass the vastness of Jordan Pond and the surrounding mountains. For the most dramatic lighting, aim for the golden hours – shortly after sunrise or before sunset. During these times, the light is softer, casting a warm glow and creating beautiful shadows that add depth to your images. Reddit

Don't overlook the reflections in Jordan Pond, especially on calm mornings or evenings. These mirror-like surfaces can create stunning symmetrical compositions. Consider bringing a polarizing filter to enhance the colors and reduce glare on the water. Remember to pack a sturdy tripod if you plan to shoot in low light conditions or want to achieve long exposures for silky water effects. Reddit
