Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Jamestown Bridge for its stunning views of Narragansett Bay, especially during sunrise and sunset. Many appreciate that it's a toll-free crossing, adding to its appeal as a scenic and accessible route. While it may not have the iconic status of the Pell Bridge for some, its beauty and practicality make it a beloved landmark.

"Jamestown Bridge is truly a beautiful bridge. I used to drive over it almost every day, and the views never got old. The sunsets from the bridge are stunning, and even the early mornings with the sunrise have a quiet, peaceful beauty. Sometimes we take places like this for granted—crossing them so often that we forget how special they are. But looking back, I really appreciate how breathtaking this spot is. It’s more than just a bridge—it’s a reminder of how nature and everyday life can come together in the most beautiful ways."

Danela Gutierrez

"Planning began in the 1960s, as the original Jamestown Bridge that was opened in 1940 struggled to handle growing traffic, especially after the Newport Pell Bridge opened in 1969. After years of debate over location, width, and materials, construction finally began in September 1985. It was completed in 1992, spanning the West Passage of Narragansett Bay and linking North Kingstown to Jamestown.

The bridge’s design is a post-tensioned, double-cell concrete box girder. This design was chosen for its durability and clean lines. It stretches 7,350 feet long, with a width of 72 feet and a tallest span of 135 feet above the water. It carries four lanes of Route 138 and includes safety walkways, though they’re not open to pedestrians.

And there is NO TOLL to cross the Jamestown Verrazano Bridge. For me? That's five stars."

"The Jamestown Verrazano Bridge is an iconic bridge in RI. It has four lanes and connects North Kingstown to Jamestown. It's made of concrete and opened in 1992. It goes over Narragansett Bay.

When I go to Newport, this is the first bridge I take to get to the Newport Bridge. The Jamestown bridge is a little smaller and less grand than the Newport Bridge. It's still a cool bridge to drive over and see the lovely views of the bay. I've also gone boating/fishing right under it. Overall, it's decent bridge that was recently repaired in 2008; definitely a RI landmark."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Construction of the Jamestown Bridge

The current Jamestown Bridge, a vital link in Rhode Island's transportation network, replaced an aging predecessor. Planning for a new bridge began in the 1960s as the original Jamestown Bridge, opened in 1940, struggled to accommodate increasing traffic, especially after the opening of the Pell Bridge in 1969. After extensive debate regarding its location, width, and materials, construction commenced in September 1985 and was completed in 1992. Reddit

The bridge's design is a post-tensioned, double-cell concrete box girder, chosen for its strength and aesthetic appeal. It spans 7,350 feet across the West Passage of Narragansett Bay, connecting North Kingstown to Jamestown. With a width of 72 feet and a tallest span of 135 feet above the water, it efficiently carries four lanes of Route 138. Reddit

This modern structure replaced the original Jamestown Bridge, which had served the community for decades but eventually became insufficient for the growing demands of traffic. The new bridge stands as a testament to engineering and planning, ensuring a reliable connection for residents and visitors alike. Reddit

Experiencing the Jamestown Bridge: Views and Vibe

Driving across the Jamestown Bridge offers a consistently beautiful experience, with many locals and visitors appreciating its scenic value. The views of Narragansett Bay are a constant highlight, especially during the magical hours of sunrise and sunset. Even on a routine commute, the vistas can be breathtaking, reminding people of the natural beauty of Rhode Island. Reddit

While the Pell/Newport Bridge might be considered more 'fancy' or 'iconic' by some, the Jamestown Bridge holds its own charm, partly due to the absence of a toll. This makes it a more accessible and perhaps more appreciated part of the daily commute or a scenic drive. The bridge's design, a concrete box girder, provides a sense of solidity and clean lines as you traverse it. Reddit+1

Some travelers have noted that suspension bridges like this can sway and groan in high winds, which is a normal characteristic of such structures designed for flexibility. While this can be unnerving for some, it's a testament to the engineering that allows the bridge to withstand various weather conditions. TikTok+1
