What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning desert beauty and unique sand dunes, calling it a hidden gem of Washington. The Columbia River views are breathtaking, and the hike offers a good workout with rewarding scenery. However, the lack of shade and potential for extreme heat, especially in summer, are significant drawbacks, alongside the unmarked trailhead and unpaved access roads.
"Stunningly beautiful and hard to believe this desert climate and terrain is in the Washington or the Pacific Northwest! I was able to check off hiking in sand dunes from my bucket list just by driving three hours east of Seattle. The hike is a moderate 6ish mile hike through various terrains along the Columbia River, featuring two beautiful sand dunes, which make for some great photos. Be sure to wear a hat and plenty of sunscreen as there is no shade. And do yourself a favor and stop by The Ranch Royal Family Farming for a delicious burger and shake while in the area."

"We stopped at this beautiful hike on our way to Palouse Falls. There was no one else there and the parking and trail head werenβt mark save for a small clearing and one little post. The trail was easy to follow once you get out there though, and it was an absolutely beautiful hike. We hiked about one hour in which will get you to the first dune and you can see the second dune about 30 to 50 minutes walk from that. We saw great wildflowers, cool animal tracks and I even saw a wild animal, just not sure what it was. LOL. There are no bathrooms and part of the road out to the trail is unpaved. It was not hard, but there were a few places to go uphill for a short time to get your heart pumping, and if you were to walk up the sand dunes it would give you some extra cardio if you were looking for it."

"This is one of the hidden gems of central Washington. A 2 mile easy hike takes you to the beautiful sand dunes. Awesome location for taking pictures. Views are breathtaking throughout. Carry plenty of water and wear good shoes since last 1 mile has a quite some sand. Recommend starting early to beat the heat which can be nasty. The trail has limited parking, no toilets and last 3 miles of drive were gravel road when we visited."
