"My husband and I had a troubling experience during our visit to the Fort Vasquez Welcome Center on Sunday, November 9.
The staff member working in the early afternoon was extremely rude and behaved inappropriately toward us. While discussing the history of Platteville and Fort Vasquez with the attendant, he mentioned that the site was on the Mormon Trail. Our conversation naturally turned to the history of the Mormon migration and the persecution they faced before reaching the Salt Lake Valley.
I shared that I previously worked in refugee resettlement and had collaborated with many members of the Latter-day Saint community. I expressed my respect for how they draw on their own history of displacement and hardship to show empathy toward modern refugees and other marginalized groups.
At that point, the attendant abruptly interjected with a comment claiming that “sharia law is going to be imposed on the country because of Muslims taking over.” I replied that I don’t believe that is true, and he insisted that it was already happening. When I calmly asked him where this is occurring, he became agitated and ordered me to leave the visitor center. I reminded him that it was a public visitor center and museum, but he angrily insisted it was not a museum and told me again to get out.
I left and walked around the old fort, hoping I could return to my car without passing through the building again. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible. When I walked back through the visitor center, the attendant was sitting behind the counter, scowling and refusing to acknowledge us. It was an extremely strange and uncomfortable experience.
The interaction was not only unprofessional but also deeply unsettling. His hostility and bigoted remarks made me feel unwelcome, And made my husband, as a person of color and an immigrant, feel unsafe."
