What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Umtanum Falls offers a scenic and relatively short hike with a surprisingly impressive cascade. Visitors enjoy the shaded forest path and the unique, albeit challenging, adventure of reaching the base, especially in winter. However, the trail can be muddy and uneven, requiring sturdy footwear, and the descent to the falls is considered sketchy and potentially hazardous in icy conditions.
"The trail was muddy with some branches to duck under. I had to wash the mud out of my shoes and socks when I got home. I had a baby in a backpack, and this trail was at the end of my comfort zone for bringing the baby along. Normally I enjoy a good scramble, which this doesn't quite have. It is definitely an uneven trail, with some minor spots where hands-on-the-trail is almost needed. Its hard to see the falls because you come out right on top of them and the trail around them is sketchy (I didn't bother even checking it out with the baby along), but the scenery is still quite nice. Most of the trail should have good shade during the summer."

"Easy hike to the top of the waterfall. It's really icy and slick, though, to the bottom, but it's super fun getting there and back up. Had to slide on our butts for part of it since there was a sheet of ice an inch or 2 thick. It's really steep for part of it, so you have to basically climb your way back up but totally worth it and a lot of fun!! It's one of my favorite hikes I've done recently. But if you get scared easily or don't like sketchy paths, then I would wait for summer! But if you like adventure this is the perfect time of year! I only wish it was warmer so I could get in the water. Will do this one again for sure!!"
