What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Tunnel Hill State Trail's well-maintained crushed limestone surface and extensive shade, making it ideal for long rides. The historic railroad tunnel is a unique highlight, though a light is essential. While generally praised, occasional fallen trees can present minor challenges.
"Rode the trail in mid October 2025 from the very northern terminus in Eldorado to its Southern Terminus near Karnak, IL. The trail was in good shape with some bumpy spots where the trail had been patched with larger rock but all in all the surface is in good shape. Cudos to the Illinois Dept of Natural Resources in keeping up with the maintenance of this beautiful trail. The trail goes through many beautiful eco systems. From open prairie, rolling hills and farms, rugged hills and forest, and wetlands. Of course the main attraction is the tunnel. It is very neat. Warning: bring a light! Although it does not seem like it would be needed lots of folks have rode into the tunnel walls in the darkness. Lots of places to get water on the trail and vault toilets are also numerous. Definitely stop at Sandburn junction and get a ice cream! Camping is available in Karnak, Il right on the trail. Google Main Brothers Campground Karnak Il for details. The park in Vienna is a nice spot. The trail museum is here but it's hours are a mystery. The city of Vienna also has a rail road museum there as well. There are several food options on Vienna. A newly built bike path takes you past most. And a quick trip down town takes you to Neds Shed which is an area icon for bbq and burgers. Best time to travel this trail is in the fall in my opinion. Although even in the summer this trail is well shaded and comfortable to ride. So get out there and ride!!"

"Loved the trail! Nice long easy ride almost entirely shaded. My only complaint is a couple of trees down across the trail just north of the tunnel. I sure hope they get them moved before my return trip tomorrow. The first one was a real challenge to get the bikes around."

"Super trail for beginners or expert cyclists. We traveled from Vienna south to Karnak, but the wetland center was only a couple more miles. It was about a 22 mile trip down and back. The trail was an old railroad bed formatted for bikes..some rocky areas but mostly easy biking. Nice bridges over creeks were also on the route. I did see one snake on the trip. There are wetlands and forest areas on both sides. Karnak and Vienna both have bathrooms and fresh water."
