What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Panorama Loop's breathtaking views and unique desert scenery, often calling it a highlight of their Joshua Tree visit. Many appreciate the solitude found when starting early and the rewarding challenge of the hike. While generally considered moderate, some find the ascents demanding. The trail's beauty, especially during sunrise and spring, is frequently praised.
"Incredible hike! My first experience at Joshua Tree and only time for one trail, so I’m glad I chose this one. My partner and I went at sunrise last Saturday and had the entire trail to ourselves. I couldn’t believe how quiet it was. The views were unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, the pictures could never do it justice. Just pure California magic.
We aren’t in the worst shape ever but I wouldn’t call us the most experienced hikers either, it took us about two and a half hours to hike the entire 6+ mile trail and that includes breaks along the way. We took the advice we saw from other Google/all trails reviews and went left once we reached the panorama loop/Warren peak fork. We brought several layers expecting lots of wind as we reached the vista, but we lucked out with great weather. Still didn’t regret having those layers however, especially at the beginning of the hike before the sun came up. It was quite cold! Packed some cliff bars, drinkable yogurts, plenty of water and Gatorade to replenish electrolytes and felt ready to take on whatever Joshua Tree wanted to throw at us! Can’t wait to go back and explore more!"

"We parked at the black rock camp ground and started the hike from there. We got tickets (30 USD per vehicle) as we went to Ryan mountain the previous day, but no one was there to check our tickets when we arrived at black rock camp ground so maybe you can do it for free? Not sure, but I felt it was worth it to pay because it allows them to maintain the place.
We did the hike in march and the weather / temperature was perfect! The initial part of the hike was a bit warmer, it gets a bit windy at the top so would suggest to bring a windbreaker, it really helps. We start off with sandy terrains, and there are more greenery as you start to ascend (we did it anti clockwise). I think both ways are fine
You may feel like there isn’t much to see during the initial parts of the hike, but the view at the top is worth it, trust me! Overall the hike wasn’t too difficult even though it is rated as “challenging” in their official website. You could do without any equipments but we are in relatively good shape. Many shades along the way to take a break
On human traffic: We started at around 845am and there wasn’t a lot of people. For the first hour I think we were the only ones, and I preferred if there were more people but the crowds starting to come in around 10+am, so perhaps we started too early. Met around 20-30 people along the whole 3.5 hour journey. It was a privilege to be able to experience this :) enjoy!"

"One of my favorite hikes. Trail has amazing views in all directions once you get to the loop summit. A couple of steep inclines. We went clockwise and enjoyed this direction better. With recent rains n snow some areas so green it looked like Africa with the contrast of Joshua trees and small grasslands it was not a usual desert feel. A must do loop to add on to black rock canyon."
