What a magical day. We went on two different hikes, to Crystal Hill and Palm Canyon in the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge. I was even convinced to actually enter the cave that I faked my exit from in another reel 😉 #couragethecowardlybus #iamaspelunkernow #magicalday #nomad #skoolielife #adventuretime #perfectdays #exploringarizona #homeontheroad #secrettunnel #crystalhill #palmcanyontrail #sho...

In need of a major nature break today, I drove to the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge and hiked Palm Canyon. The refuge protects big horned sheep and the palms are the only indigenous California palms in AZ!!! I also got to visit a few mine shafts and petroglyphs near La Posa. 🥰🥰🥰🙏🏻🌵🚎🧘🏻‍♀️🥾🌋

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique beauty of Palm Canyon and the surrounding desert landscapes, especially for boondocking. The challenging but rewarding hike to see Arizona's only native palms is a highlight. However, the rough access road and lack of facilities require thorough preparation.

"A really beautiful area. Turn off about an hour north of Yuma on 95, has sign. Dirt road is a bit rough, several miles of great scenery on way to trailhead. Called palm canyon due to a small grove of fan palms in a nearly vertical cleft deep in canyon. They are considered to be a very rare anomaly. Trail is steep, Rocky and rough, but doable for anyone in average shape. After rains, it gets green and has great wildflowers. Rest of the time, dry, hot, desolate. Bring plenty of water, it is not available anywhere nearby."

Doug Rockey

"Wonderful Boondocking desert area. Camped in Palm Canyon Rd. Before the actual Refuge. Large open spaces off a dirt road with beautiful views of the Kofa Mountains. Plenty of room for all types of campers. Slow going on some spots on the road. At the end of the Rd is a parking area and a Palm Canyon hiking trail. Short trail but rocky and a bit steep. California palms grow in the canyon. The sun sets are amazing. One of our favorite spots!"

Bonita Burden

"It's well worth driving 7 miles of dirt road. Trail to view the palms was 1/2 hour hike. Trail is rocky and has some loose gravel in sections so make sure you have good closed toe shoes. This canyon has gorgeous rock formations and it's very peaceful."
