Reviews Summary
Visitors are consistently impressed by the Mohammed Amin Khan Madrasah's grand scale, stunning turquoise tilework, and prime location within Khiva's historic Itchan Kala. Many highlight the unique experience of staying at the hotel within the madrasah, praising the blend of history and comfort. Some note that it's primarily an exterior view unless staying at the hotel.
"Mohammed Amin Khan Madrassah.
Located just inside the iconic West Gate (Ata Darvoza) of Khiva’s walled old city, the Mohammed Amin Khan Madrassah is one of the largest and most impressive Islamic educational buildings in Central Asia. Built in 1851–1854 during the reign of Mohammed Amin Khan, the structure was designed to be both a center of religious learning and a monument to the khan’s authority and vision.
The madrassah boasts an imposing façade of glazed turquoise tiles, arched entrances, and a large courtyard surrounded by 125 hujras (cells), once home to scholars and students. Its monumental portal and careful symmetry reflect the elegance of Khorezmian architecture. It sits next to the unfinished Kalta Minor Minaret, adding to the grandeur of Khiva’s main square.
Although it no longer functions as a madrassah, the building is well preserved and now serves as a hotel and cultural venue, offering visitors the rare chance to sleep within historic walls. Its interiors blend traditional design with modern comfort, allowing guests to experience Khiva’s heritage from the inside out.
A visit to the Mohammed Amin Khan Madrassah provides not only a glimpse into Islamic education and architecture, but also a deep connection to Khiva’s golden age as a cultural and political hub."

The madrasah has been transformed into a hotel, so I didn’t go inside, but I truly enjoyed admiring its impressive architecture and capturing photos from the outside. Worth stopping by when exploring Ichan Kala!"
