Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by the architectural beauty and ingenious design of the Bramante Staircase, often calling it a highlight of their Vatican Museums visit. Its unique double helix structure and photographic potential are frequently praised, though some note the original staircase is inaccessible and the current one is a later design.

"Incredible staircase inside the Vatican Museums. They are one of the most photographed places in the museum.
There is the original "Scala del Bramante" from 1505 which I don't have any pictures of, unfortunately.
But there is also the one from 1932 designed by Giuseppe Momo, the one in the pictures. It is actually 2 staircases. It looks like one, but it is two staircases, so one can go up and the other can go down without ever coming across each other."

Guillaume Soucy

"Wonderful design. Spiralling staircase leading to the exit from the Vatican museum. Both from above and below it looks great. An artwork in itself."

Sumanta Chakraborty

"Towards the exit of Vatican museum. Very interesting and spiral designs as staircases!"

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Bramante Staircase is a fascinating visual for children, with its unique 'two-in-one' spiral design. It's a great way to spark their curiosity about architecture and engineering. Since it's near the exit of the Vatican Museums, it can serve as a fun final stop before heading out. Reddit

Keep in mind that the Vatican Museums can be extensive and tiring for young children. Plan your visit to the museums strategically, perhaps focusing on key areas and allowing for breaks. Try to find vantage points that showcase the entire structure. Experiment with wide-angle lenses to capture the grandeur, or use a telephoto lens to compress the spirals. The Two Bramante Staircases

The Vatican Museums are home to two significant spiral staircases, both bearing the name Bramante, though with distinct histories and accessibility. The original Scala del Bramante, conceived by the renowned architect Donato Bramante around 1505, is a testament to Renaissance ingenuity. Unfortunately, this historic structure is no longer accessible to visitors, likely due to preservation efforts. Reddit

The staircase most commonly seen and photographed today is the one designed by Giuseppe Momo in 1932. This impressive structure is a marvel of engineering, featuring a double helix design. This means it's actually two separate, intertwined staircases: one for ascending and one for descending. This clever arrangement allows for continuous, unimpeded traffic flow in both directions, making it a highly functional and visually striking architectural element. Reddit

Photography Opportunities

The Bramante Staircase is a photographer's delight, renowned for its striking symmetry and unique double helix design. The 1932 creation by Giuseppe Momo offers a visually arresting spectacle, with its two intertwined spiral pathways creating a sense of endless motion. Many visitors find it to be one of the most photogenic spots within the vast Vatican Museums. Reddit

For the best photographic results, experiment with angles from both the top and the bottom of the staircase. Capturing the interplay of light and shadow on the curved walls can add depth and drama to your images. While it's a popular spot, patience is key to securing a clear shot. Consider visiting during less crowded times if possible, and always be mindful of other visitors. Reddit
