Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Kalamalka Lake's stunning, almost surreal turquoise and emerald waters, often comparing it to tropical destinations. The park offers beautiful hiking and biking trails, along with pleasant beach access for swimming and relaxation. While facilities are basic and some beach access involves a descent, the sheer natural beauty makes it a highly recommended spot.

"Kalamalka Lake, aka the “Lake of Many Colors,” is so beautiful it’ll make you double-check if your sunglasses came with an Instagram filter. The water is an unbelievable mix of turquoise and emerald, which basically screams, “Take a selfie here!” You might think you’ve stumbled into the Caribbean, but nope, you’re still in BC, just without the tropical cocktails.

Swimming is a must if you can handle the cool water, but let’s be real, the view alone is worth the trip — even if you’re just pretending to be outdoorsy while lounging on the beach. There are also some great hiking and biking trails, so you can earn those post-adventure snacks (or nap) while soaking up some killer views.

In short, Kalamalka Lake will leave you wondering why more people aren’t flocking here — but hey, at least that means fewer people photobombing your epic nature shots!"

Eknoor Gill

"Pleasant walk/ hike with spectacular lake view! There are many trail options but mostly quick and easy ones. Lots of little beaches and rocky areas you can sit down."

Kanako Sakurada

"One of those places you don’t want to rave about lest it becomes popular. Kalamalka is hands down the best lake in the Kelowna area. The turquoise water is beautiful, clear and calm (save for the occasional powered watercraft zipping through). There is a bit of a descent down from the parking lot to the beaches though so keep that in mind if you’re planning to setup for a long day. Also there is no running water (which also implies outhouses) so prepare accordingly.

But you can literally paddle board all day long. I think I dozed off for about 20 minutes and I had drifted only a few feet.

There’s a public beach area a bit further north as well but not sure how busy it gets."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Science Behind the Colors

Kalamalka Lake's famous 'tropical' colors are a natural phenomenon attributed to the high concentration of calcium carbonate (limestone) suspended in the water. This material originates from ancient glaciers that once covered the region. As sunlight interacts with these fine particles, it refracts and reflects light, creating the stunning spectrum of blues, greens, and turquoises that change throughout the year. The colors are most vivid during the warmer summer months when the water is less diluted and the limestone particles are more prevalent. TikTokInstagram

This unique geological feature makes Kalamalka Lake a standout destination in British Columbia, often compared to more exotic, tropical locales. The visual spectacle is a major draw for visitors, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike, offering a truly unique experience in Canada's interior. TikTokInstagram

Understanding the water's chemistry enhances appreciation for the lake's beauty. The changing hues are a dynamic display of natural processes, making each visit potentially different and always captivating. TikTok
