Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Ritan Park for its serene atmosphere, historical significance, and the unique juxtaposition of ancient temples with the modern CBD skyline. It's a beloved local spot for relaxation and observing daily life, offering a peaceful escape from the city's bustle.

"One of the best parks in Beijing. You can see, or even join, people doing Taichi and qigong in the mornings, ladies dancing with brocades and the Temple of the Sun."

Micheal Harding

"Seems to be a popular place for the local Beijing residents to go for a walk in the park. Free of charge to enter. When walking west to east, Google maps leads you down a somewhat deserted pathway (so initially a bit disconcerting) towards an eastern exit that was a bit of a surprise - a broken down door that you could step thru to successfully exit to the roadway. But I guess that was better than running into a locked door (dead-end)."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Historical Significance of the Temple of the Sun

The Temple of the Sun (Ritan) is one of Beijing's most important historical sites, dating back to the Ming Dynasty in the 16th century. It was one of the four great altars in Beijing, alongside the Temple of Heaven, Temple of Earth, and Temple of the Moon, where emperors would perform solemn rituals to worship the sun, praying for good harvests and national prosperity. The central altar, made of red stone, is the focal point of the complex. TikTok

Today, the temple remains are preserved within the larger Ritan Park, offering visitors a tangible connection to China's imperial past. While the original structures have undergone restoration, the site retains its spiritual and historical aura. It's a place where you can stand and imagine the ancient ceremonies that once took place here, a stark contrast to the bustling modern city surrounding it. Reddit

Visiting the Temple of the Sun provides a unique perspective on Beijing's layered history. It's not just a tourist attraction but a place that reflects the deep-rooted cultural and spiritual traditions of China. The surrounding park has transformed the area into a public space, but the historical core remains a powerful reminder of imperial Beijing. TikTok
