What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Valley of Desolation for its breathtaking, otherworldly landscapes, particularly during sunset. The towering dolerite columns and panoramic Karoo vistas are described as spectacular and awe-inspiring. While some find the hikes challenging, the views are widely considered worth the effort.
"10/10 portion of the boiling lake hike. Beautiful from every direction. Our guide was very mindful of the sulfur buildups, as they can be unstable."
Adrian Santini
"Fantastic hike, not much of a scramble, pretty easy path to follow in early Feb so if you're a confident walker no need for a guide. We got lucky doing the hike on a cloudy day and only caught a bit of rain as we returned. Definitely could be tougher if it's a clear day as you are quite exposed for the second half of the walk through the valley of desolation also if it's been raining a lot it will be muddy and slower as it can be quite steep... Spectacular scenery!"
Indigo Barclay
"Cool volcanic landscape, one of the best hikes I did in the country. People will try to tell you that you need a guide. You don't really, but if you're going to go without one, it would be a good idea to bring a GPS trace of the trail so that you don't end up stepping somewhere you shouldn't and getting badly burned. The trail is not at all well marked in the actual valley. Alternately, make someone you don't like go in front of you, just in case."
