"Very nice to visit. Lovely church with bell tower. Beautiful interior with icons, paintings etc. Unusual first floor cloister ( some of which is used by small businesses). A necessary visit in Hydra."

"In the center of the harbor is the Cathedral of Hydra, built in 1648 and reconstructed in 1774. A three-aisled basilica with a dome and two marble bell towers, which inside has two silver chandeliers and a golden light that has on it the heads of the Louisians of France. In the past, the Church functioned as the Monastery of the Assumption. Today in the courtyard of the Church there are the busts of Lazaros Kountouriotis and Andreas Miaoulis as well as the tomb of Lazaros Kountouriotis. In some of the buildings of the monastery is housed the Town Hall, while in the old cells the Ecclesiastical and Byzantine Museum of Hydra."

A Glimpse into Hydra's Spiritual Heart

The Hydra Cathedral, officially the Monastery of the Assumption, stands as a significant historical and religious landmark right in the bustling harbor. Originally built in 1648 and later reconstructed in 1774, it's a testament to the island's enduring spirit. Its architecture is a striking example of a three-aisled basilica, crowned with a dome and flanked by two elegant marble bell towers. The interior is equally impressive, featuring a beautiful array of icons and paintings, illuminated by two ornate silver chandeliers and a unique golden light. Reddit

Beyond its religious function, the cathedral complex is a vibrant part of Hydra's cultural fabric. The first-floor cloister, a rather unusual architectural feature, now hosts several small businesses, adding a unique commercial element to the sacred space. This blend of the spiritual and the everyday is a characteristic charm of Hydra. Within the former monastic cells, you'll find the Ecclesiastical and Byzantine Museum of Hydra, which houses a collection of religious artifacts and art, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the island's rich ecclesiastical history. Reddit

The courtyard itself is a place of remembrance, featuring the busts of two pivotal figures in Greek naval history: Lazaros Kountouriotis and Andreas Miaoulis. The tomb of Lazaros Kountouriotis is also located here, grounding the cathedral's significance in the island's heroic past. For those seeking a comprehensive experience, exploring the museum and appreciating the historical figures in the courtyard alongside the main church is highly recommended. Reddit

Navigating the Cathedral Complex

The Hydra Cathedral is more than just a church; it's a multi-faceted complex that offers a variety of experiences. Its prime location in the center of the harbor makes it an unmissable landmark for anyone arriving on the island. Visitors often remark on its beauty and historical importance, noting that it's a 'necessary visit' for understanding Hydra. Reddit

When exploring, remember that the first-floor cloister is a unique feature. While it serves as a space for small businesses, it retains its historical ambiance.
