What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount High West is lauded for its breathtaking panoramic views, offering a less crowded alternative to Victoria Peak. Hikers appreciate the rewarding climb and the stunning golden hour vistas, making it a favorite for photographers and those seeking a more serene experience. Some find the trails challenging, and clear weather is essential for optimal views.
"When you are at the peak plaza, follow the direction showed on the boards. Most of the part it is normal road and easy to do walk. The last part to climb can be a bit tough depending on your condition. During the climbing it is shown that you have reached 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 of it. Don’t give up, take your time if you need to rest. You will be rewarded when you reach the top with the great view. We had a cloudy day, so the pictures show even you are above the clouds, really stunning"

"My favourite hike of Hong Kong! I recommend timing your walk to make it for sunset. The sunset was absolutely gorgeous but be wary of mozzies at that time.
We started the hike from Central, taking old peak road towards the peak (which is a steady steep incline). It was quite humid in April24, so I was sweating bullets but overall wasn't a difficult hike. It was really good to have a break at the peak with a few eateries including 7/11. From the peak, we continued on, following the signs to high west. It was a relatively easy walk, slight inclines until you reach stairs that take you up to the vantage point."

"Absolutely a joy to come up and enjoy the sunset. No matter what is the weather, the view is amazing.
If you want to be lazy, you can take a bus 15 or mini bus number 1, get off at the peak. From the peak, heads towards Harlech road. Walk along the road until u see a garden. Entrance for high west is there. Although there are plenty of steps to go to the top, it is properly paved. Worth the effort particularly on a clear day like this. The view is truly amazing.
It can get windy at times but it is a joy to enjoy the breeze.
Today, we managed to see lamma Island, lion rock , shenzhen and a fabulous Victoria harbour. Check out the pictures. The calmness and the colours are amazing. Don't forget about the butterflies !"

The Mount High West Hike Experience
Many visitors combine a trip to Mount High West with a visit to Victoria Peak. A popular strategy is to take the Peak Tram up and then embark on a hike that either leads to Mount High West or starts from there. Some Redditors suggest a 'reverse route' from The Peak to Mount High West, which can be a more manageable way to experience the views. The journey itself offers glimpses of Hong Kong's natural beauty, contrasting with the urban sprawl.
The payoff for the hike is the spectacular panoramic view from the summit. Unlike the more commercialized viewpoints at The Peak, Mount High West provides a more natural and expansive vista. It's particularly renowned for its golden hour views, making it a prime spot for sunset photography. The feeling of accomplishment after the hike, coupled with the breathtaking scenery, makes it a memorable part of any Hong Kong itinerary.
Capturing the Views: Photography Tips
For capturing the sweeping panoramas, a wide-angle lens is highly recommended to fit the vastness of the landscape into your frame. Consider bringing a tripod, especially if you plan to stay for sunset or sunrise, as it will help with stability and allow for longer exposures to capture the changing light. While the main viewing point offers iconic shots, don't hesitate to explore the surrounding trails for unique perspectives and compositions.
It's worth noting that Hong Kong's weather can be unpredictable, and haze can sometimes obscure the views. Checking the weather forecast before your visit is advisable. While some users have shared drone footage, always ensure you are aware of and comply with local drone regulations before flying.
