Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Sagara Marikamba Temple for its powerful deity and vibrant architecture, especially the striking gopura. The triennial Marikamba Jatre is highlighted as a massive, deeply spiritual event, drawing immense crowds and offering a unique cultural experience. However, the temple's central location means it can get very crowded, particularly during the fair, which can be overwhelming for some.

"The Marikamba Temple is centrally located in Sagara (also spelled “Sagar”) in Karnataka’s Shimoga (Shivamogga) district. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Marikamba, a revered and fierce form of Durga or Parvati.

I visited this temple just before afternoon closing on a Wednesday of September. It has a super cool external vibrant tower (gopura), in the sanctum the deity adorned in garlands.

I liked the temple for its nice and colorful Gopura, but it is located in a very crowded locality. As I was visiting Jog falls which is close by I decided to visit this temple.

The temple was originally built in the 16th century by Venkatappa Nayaka, ruler of the Keladi–Ikkeri kingdom, who adopted Marikamba as his family deity.

Adi Shankaracharya is said to have had a divine vision in Sagara, where the goddess appeared in his dream and directed him to consecrate her footprints at the city’s outskirts. Venkatappa Nayaka later relocated these to the city center and built the temple in 1596.

The temple hosts the Marikamba Jatre (fair) every three years, typically in February or March. This nine-day socio-religious event draws devotees from across Karnataka. A highlight of the festival is a 16-ft-high chariot carrying the goddess’s image, which is taken out in a grand procession."
