Off the beaten path in Genoa, the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Vigne is considered the oldest Marian sanctuary in Genoa and it seems that the first sacred building was built a few years before the year 1000. My favorite is inside, on the sides of the counter-façade on the right with the sculptural group “the grace of the Baptism of Christ”. Here is Saint John the Baptist who, using a shell, pour...

Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently amazed by the dramatic contrast between Santa Maria delle Vigne's humble exterior and its incredibly opulent Baroque interior, filled with breathtaking gold designs and intricate ceiling frescoes. Many highlight the 'Grace of the Baptism of Christ' sculpture and the clever use of a mirror to view the ceiling art. While its hidden nature is part of its charm, some find the exterior underwhelming before discovering the splendor within.

"From a totally unassuming exterior to the most incredible and sublime interior.

It was raining and we ducted into a little door in a laneway, not expecting to find what we saw inside.

This is quite possibly one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. The intricate paintings and gold designs on the ceiling are exquisite.

There is a large and very strategically place mirror in the entry that is magnified and allows you to view the ceiling in detail.

The marble, stonework and paintings by seriously amazing artisans of the past will take you breath away.

Highly recommended"
