Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Fudodo for its historical significance as a National Treasure and its serene, ancient atmosphere, reminiscent of the Heian period. The architectural beauty and the solemn presence of Fudo Myoo are frequently highlighted as deeply impressive aspects of the visit. While some note an admission fee, most find the experience to be well worth it.

"``Fudodo'', which stands quietly in the Danjo Garan of Mt. Koya, is a national treasure building that has a quiet presence in contrast to the gorgeous Konpon Daito. It retains the atmosphere of the Heian period and leaves a deep impression on visitors.

[Location and access]
Fudo-do is located in Danjo Garan, Koyasan, Koya-machi, Ito-gun, Wakayama Prefecture. From Gokurakubashi Station on the Nankai Koya Line, take the cable car to Koyasan Station, then take the Nankai Rinkan Bus and get off at the Kondo-mae bus stop, about a 5-minute walk. If you are coming by car, there are several free parking lots in the surrounding area, including the Nakamon-mae parking lot and the Reihokan-mae parking lot.

[Facilities and services]
Fudo-do Hall is said to have been built at the request of Hachijo Nyoin, the princess of Emperor Toba. It was originally located within the precincts of Isshin-in Temple, but in 1908 it was moved to the current Danjo Garan. The building has an elegant appearance reminiscent of the Shinden-zukuri style of the Heian period, and is attracting attention architecturally as well, with different shapes of buildings and roofs seen from all sides. It was designated as a National Treasure (old) in 1899, and its value is still recognized today.

[Highlights/Attractions]
The biggest appeal of Fudo-do is its tranquil appearance and the fact that it still retains the architectural style of the Heian period. Inside the hall, Fudo Myoo is enshrined as the principal image, and there is a solemn atmosphere. It is also said that the four corners of the hall all have different shapes, which were created by four craftsmen each according to their own wishes. In spring, the nearby cherry blossoms bloom beautifully and soothe the hearts of visitors."

It was very cool and comfortable inside the hall.
There is an admission fee, but it is more than worth it!
The vermilion color of the exterior is so beautiful that it cannot be captured on camera."

丸山富也

"Although the main pagoda is the main attraction, the Fudodo Hall was built long ago and is a designated national treasure.

Explanatory sign: Fudodo Hall designated as a national treasure March 29, 1952
According to legend, this hall was built by the monk Gyosho in 1197 at the request of Emperor Toba's Empress. It is a Japanese-style building from the Kamakura period, and the style of residential architecture from before that was applied to Buddhist hall architecture. The exact date of construction is unknown, but the shape of the balustrade on the Buddhist altar and the latticework on the paneling suggests that it was built in the late Kamakura period.
The Buddhist altar is located behind the sanctuary, and wooden walls are attached between the raigobashira pillars. The gently sloping roof is a type of ekawatake, and it retains the appearance of a shinden-zukuri style of architecture from the Heian period."

The Architectural Marvel of Fudodo

Fudodo, particularly the one in Koyasan's Danjo Garan, is a significant National Treasure that stands as a testament to ancient Japanese architecture. It beautifully retains the Shinden-zukuri style characteristic of the Heian period, offering a glimpse into the past. The building's unique design, with potentially different shapes on its four corners crafted by individual artisans, adds to its historical and artistic value. Unlike some of the more ornate structures in the Danjo Garan, Fudodo possesses a solemn and understated elegance that leaves a lasting impression. Reddit

This architectural gem is believed to have been built at the request of Hachijo Nyoin, a princess of Emperor Toba, and later moved to its current location. Its construction date is not precisely known, but stylistic elements suggest it dates back to the late Kamakura period. The gently sloping roof and the latticework on the paneling are key features that highlight its historical significance. The building's resilience over centuries, surviving fires and reconstructions that have affected other structures, underscores its importance as one of the oldest buildings in the Danjo Garan. Reddit

Visitors often remark on the tranquil presence of Fudodo, which contrasts with the grandeur of other sites. The vermilion color of its exterior is particularly striking, though some note that it's difficult to capture its true beauty on camera. The surrounding area also enhances the experience, especially in spring when cherry blossoms add a layer of natural beauty to the historical site. Reddit

Spiritual Experiences at Fudodo

Fudodo temples, such as Naritasan Fukagawa Fudodo in Tokyo, offer profound spiritual experiences, most notably the Goma fire ritual. This intense ceremony involves the burning of wooden tablets amidst chanting and prayers, creating a powerful and unique atmosphere. Visitors describe witnessing this ritual as a deeply moving and spiritual encounter, a rare opportunity to connect with Buddhist traditions. Instagram+2

Beyond the Goma ritual, the presence of Fudo Myoo (Acala), the 'unmovable wisdom king,' is central to the spiritual significance of these temples. The statues of Fudo Myoo are often described as powerful and awe-inspiring, capable of helping visitors let go of negativity and find inner peace. The solemn atmosphere within the temple grounds encourages reflection and a sense of calm. Instagram

For those seeking a deeper immersion, some Fudodo locations offer temple stays, allowing visitors to experience monastic life, including meditation and morning rituals. This provides a unique opportunity to disconnect from the everyday and engage with the spiritual practices of Buddhism. TikTok
