Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the educational exhibits and the opportunity to observe local wildlife and scenic wetland views. The helpful staff and the picturesque nature trails are also frequently praised. However, the limited amenities, particularly the lack of vending machines and water dispensers, and the infrequent public transport can be a drawback for some.

"Nice little bird Sanctuary. I went in June 2025, so around the beginning of summer.

It's staffed and accessible from 9am onwards, which is a bit late for most birding in summer since sunrise is around 3:30am in June, which is a little counter-productive.

It has a range of leaflets and informative material on local species. It also has scopes to view the local reed beds, ocean, lake, and forest edge.

The first time I came to Shunkunitai I'd forgotten to buy a bottle of water before catching the bus, but I didn't want to go back too quickly since it was about 660 yen each way and the bus only ran every couple of hours. Unfortunately this centre didn't have any vending machines or water dispensers leaving me thirsty, which was a bit disappointing. When I asked about getting water I was told to drive to the local road station, which wasn't particularly helpful since I didn't have a car."

"This Nature Centre is full of useful information and heaps of brochures about this conservation area and about the birds of Hokkaido in general. There are wonderful views from the back windows overlooking the area. We interacted with two assistants, and both were very helpful and kind. To visit the Shunkunitai Wild Bird Sanctuary, you need to drive around to the wetlands, but the Song Bird Trail, or Arboretum Trail, that starts beside the Nature Centre, is also well worth exploring if you have time. If you're quiet, you'll probably see deer. We saw about 8. It's a very picturesque forest. It was very muddy in spots, so wear the right footwear."

Pamela Asai

"We went there in early October. A bit of a disappointment as you cannot walk really far into the peninsula."
