Has anyone hiked Dewasanzan recently? Looking for routing/lodging suggestions.

I'm just not sure from the mixed/outdated information on the internet about how to route the 3 mountains and where to stay. Seems like Haguro and Gassan are decently easy and quick so should I hike those two for one day, stay somewhere(temple lodging?), and then head to Yudono…

Dewa Sanzan During Off-Season

This coming June, two friends and I are trying to do the Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage (Hagurosan --> Gassan --> Yudonosan). The only problem is that it seems the bus lines from Hagurosan to Gassan and Yudonosan back to Tsuruoka don't start running until July. Does anyone have…

The Dewa Sanzan Trek is Dead

Against my better judgement and advice from fellow Redditors, I traveled to Tsuruoka yesterday to attempt the Dewa Sanzan trek—something I’ve wanted to do for many years. I left my stuff at the station, save a backpack, and hopped the bus bound for Haguro. I got off at the base…

Dewa Sanzan Buses? Is this a joke?

I was planning to do the Dewa Sanzan hike from Monday 9/13 to Tuesday 9/14, going the traditional route from Haguro, staying a night at Saikan, then taking the bus from Haguro Sancho to Gassan Hachigome on Tuesday morning. I started checking Google maps for bus times and it…

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Oami Yudono Gateway for its stunning natural beauty, particularly the vibrant autumn foliage framing the iconic torii gate. The spiritual atmosphere of the Yudono-san summit shrine is deeply impactful, despite photography restrictions. The unique foot bath offers a relaxing end to the pilgrimage.

"Top shrine, can be walked from the lower car park or take the bus. Keep healthy and walk the route. Pleasant mountain scenery. You can decide whether you want to enter the shrine, boots off affair, purified or get scolded for standing on the concrete or waving a camera at the entry. Mind was purified by the walk so didn't bother with the entry to the top shrine. The shrine itself isn't very photogenic (& you can't take photos you wouldn't want too, looked so mess), the torii is photogenic at the car park and the scenery on the hike."

"I went here on 3rd November 2024, one day before the place is closed. The wind was so cold, it felt like 2 degree celcius. But the gate looked so wonderful with the autumn leaves."

Pinasindi Wikandari
