Timing Your Arrival

Don't arrive too early! The main entrance opens 40 minutes before the show, and the venue itself only 20 minutes prior. This avoids waiting around in a potentially small lobby. Check show times carefully for opera and ballet performances.

Payment & Amenities

Be prepared for cash-only at the cafeteria during intermissions. While the venue is a cultural gem, some areas show wear. Card payments are standard in 2024, so this is a notable exception for refreshments.

One of the best things i did in Slovenia was a day trip to Postojna Caves & Predjama Castle. 🐉🏰 I took the bus, which took a little over an hour, and spent most of the day here. You will need to buy tickets in advance for the caves as you can only go in with a tour at a specific time. Predjama Castle doesnt have tour times, but can be purchased in a combined ticket. It has a self guided tour. You...

Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by the magical quality of the opera and ballet performances, often describing them as a highlight of their Ljubljana visit. The historic Neo-Renaissance building adds to the charm, though some areas are noted as needing refurbishment. A key practical tip is the cash-only policy at the intermission cafeteria, which can be inconvenient for international guests.

"Whether an opera or a ballet, I am always overwhelmed by the performances. It is like magic to me. The building itself speaks stories, as well. It has become one of my favourite places to visit and enjoy. See you again soon."

"went to see the nutcracker and was there 45 minutes before and the main entrance wasn't open yet (it opened 40 minutes before the show, entrance to the venue opens 20 minutes before the show, so don't come too early). the lobby is quite small and the whole venue is divided into stalls, boxes/lodges and gallery. the enterior is in parts in a bad condition, so refurbishing is highly needed. the views are good wherever your seat is (I sat in the first row, where you can see the show and the orchestra playing). there are lots of toilets on each floor (most busy ones are in the basement) and croupiers will gladly help you with seating. I didn't like the fact that there is a net between the stage and the audience. the performance itself was nice and at a high level."

Tadej Strnad

"It is one of the best things to do in Ljubljana. The Opera house is sooo great. The location is wonderful. The staff are extremely helpful, professional, and friendly. I was lucky with the show that I have attended (Don Quixote), which is a novel by Miguel de Cervantes.
There was a problem that they (management) must take care of it. It is strange and weird that the cafeteria where people go to enjoy a drink at the usual break, don't accept cards (bank or credit cards - only cash!! Really? In 2024!! We, foreigners, were not informed about that, and that was the ONLY bad thing about the Opera House of Ljubljana.
Recommended to the max."
