What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the unique 'Disneyland in a cave' experience, praising the whimsical art and the residents' hospitality. The stunning coastal hike and the abandoned railway bridge add to the adventure. While some found the initial entry a bit dark or unsettling, most found the experience incredibly rewarding and worth the donation.
"This place was very unique, from the art works to the people, there are 3 men living here and in order to enter the cave you have to give a donation which really isn’t such a big deal, when you realise that the man who lives in the cave is allowing you to walk around his “house” and admire the funky and frankly surprising layout of the cave, you can donate R20 to R50 really up to you ( make sure to bring cash), I went there with another solo traveler, the two of us did feel uneasy at first, but we did let our curiosity control us in the moment, which led to such a cool experience, as long as your polite and kind, the people there are very welcoming and open to people coming to see “Disney land in a cave”, fyi when you walk into the cave it’s going to be a little dark and there is going to be a little bit of a smell but it’s to be expected your in a cave that someone has been building up since 2006
( I always recommend exploring with atleast one other person but I did talk to a traveler earlier in the day and she did it all by herself which I give big kudos to her, you are going to meet odd people but it really is to be expected they permanently live on the side of a cliff away from the rest of society, you be safe by being open minded and understanding)"

"On our way, we weren’t sure if we wanted to continue, as you have to go through a dark tunnel. Happy we took the chance as it is a short walk and we were nicely welcomed on the other side, didn’t feel unsafe at all. They are very hospitable!
From the beach (or earlier in the city) you can just follow the track and enjoy breathtaking views on your way. Don’t forget R25 (cash) for the entrance."

"Seriously worth checking out if you do not mind the hike up. We loved everyone about it. If you go park your car at the wildernes beachfront parking, and then walk to the traintracks just above that, you can take a short-ish hike up to the Grotto. The walk is gorgeous and you can see the ocean view from above. Then when you walk through the cave enterance you are at the grotto. Very very beautiful place with stunning views. You can even walk further to see the train bridge upclose, but be aware you cannot walk on it anymore as it is closed. Also for the grotto itself.. you need to take a R25 cash with you to go see into the actual other cave, we did not know this so we could not, but it looks cute. Just a bunch of trinkets in there."
