"A tour agency booked this hotel for us *
Beautiful property that has seen better days. The caretaker is the highlight of the property and her cooking (extra charge) is the best we had in Kairouan. She went above and beyond and was the highlight for us in an otherwise unfortunate stay.
Unfortunately the rest of the property is run down and the upstairs terrace, whilst giving a nice vantage view, is abandoned with dead plants and broken sun ravaged furniture.
The room we were given had two double beds on either side of a large room but unfortunately it did not have a bathroom with a shower or hot water... just a toilet and a sink with cold water. Might be refreshing in the summer, but it was miserable when we stayed because it was cold. The room does have access to a shower in the kitchen next door but you do need to walk the internal space to access it. It might not be an issue for most.
The other room with an ensuite did have a shower (with a very short curtain so water got everywhere) and hot water, but the beds were singles. Also, the bathroom doors in both rooms did not close.
We were offered plenty of clean towels. The bed sheet had a stain but I was told that it is clean but just stained. The heavy blankets had a not so fresh smell to them, but I am one of those people that has a very keen sense of smell.
The closets were very dusty when we arrived, so much so that you could not put clothes in them, but a housekeeper was called and when we returned to the room in the evening the shelves were dusted and fabric places on the shelving so we could put our clothes, and the bathroom was cleaned.
The room does not have tea making facilities but you can ask for tea and coffee from the caretaker.
The house is one of the oldest houses so tourists come to have a look... but it was weird having strangers come into the room I was staying in and I was glad I had cleaned up and locked my suitcase.
There is a water pump that turns on every 5 seconds for 7 seconds in the nighttime. I counted. I thankfully had ear plugs...also, I told the caretaker and she just switched it off at night for the rest of the night we were there and it was very silent and serene.
We went in Ramadan which is a difficult month to travel and we understand that everyone is tired...but the property needs serious TLC for the price that they are asking. Better properties are available for less. It is hard to write an honest review when someone at the property was so kind and did their best... but I would have wanted a warning to know what i was getting into.
The location is amazing and so close to the masjid which was great because we did our early morning prayers there in Ramadan."

"Very nice stay in this traditional house! The host was very kind and available (and could fluently speek in English), the room was very clean and cozy, good located in the Medina, amazing terrace with view on the city's roofs, great breakfast included in the price. Pity that there was no hot water in our private room (that why the 4 stars and not 5 for the review). We found out only at the end of our stay that we should have wait many minutes for the hot water and that - in case - there were other shared toilets closed to the hall."

"Really enjoyed the stay. We booked very late for the same night so was very thankful that they could check us in late and provided tea and cookie after we arrived. The next day’s breakfast was great. And the terrace was amazing and the decorations throughout the house are well thought."

The Historic Charm of Dar Hassine Allani

For instance, some rooms may have limited hot water or en-suite bathrooms, and the upkeep of certain areas, like the upstairs terrace, has been noted as needing improvement.
Despite these points, the unique experience of staying in such a historic dwelling is a major draw. It offers a more immersive cultural experience than a standard hotel, allowing guests to connect with the local heritage.
